Rethinking Rue Cler hotel - other options

Our family, two adults, two children, will be in Paris July 13-17 and we booked a hotel in the Rue Cler area. My husband loves this area mainly because it’s quiet, safe, and not super busy. I am fine with this location area but it is not central to much other than the Eiffel Tower. I am wondering if there’s a better place to stay that has a similar feel. Since this is our children’s first international trip I want it to be memorable. I realize there’s not going to be much since we only have a couple weeks but I thought I would ask just in case someone has a recommendation with availability. Budget would be less than $700 per night. Preferably 1 room or connecting rooms. The kids can share a bed. Thanks everyone

We recently stayed at the Hotel Belloy in the 6th arrondissement. It was next to the Cluny Musemum and close to the Luxembourg Gardens, the Latin Quarter and Notre Dame.

It would be easier if you gave your per/night hotel budget (or is that the $3000 figure)? Do you need a family room? Two rooms?, etc.

Hi Suzann, the 7th is my preferred area too. We walk everywhere from there - ET, Arc de Triomphe, Napoleon’s Tomb, Orsay, Orangerie, Louvre, Notre Dame… we’re also close to several metro and bus stops. I stayed in the Marias (4th) once but prefer the 7th. What’s on your itinerary?

Rue Cler area and the 7th is not my favorite for the reasons you gave, not central at all. Notre Dame is the center of Paris, so i much prefer being in that area in the 4th arrondissement (Marais and Ile St Louis), the 5th (Latin Quarter) or the 6th (St Germain).

As a previous poster mentioned, very close to the Luxembourg Gardens would be wonderful. My all time favorite area is the 4th (the Marais and Ile St Louis - the little island next to Notre Dame). I like being as close to the river as possible. Ile St Louis is surrounded by the river with amazing views, it’s also dead quiet at night.

Pretty much all of Paris is super safe, rue Cler has no edge on safety.

I use Booking.com to find hotels.

There are 4 hotels on Ile St Louis… i’ve stayed in three, they’re all wonderful. .
Hotel de Lutèce, Hotel St Louis en l’Ile and Hotel des Deux Iles.

Too late for Hotel Jeanne d’Arc in the Marais, it’ll be booked. But lots of wonderful hotels in the Marais you can find on Booking.

Thanks everyone, I edited to add that I’d like to keep it under $700 per night, with one room or connecting rooms.
-Donna, we are planning to go to and up the Effie’s tower, Luxembourg Gardens, Tuileries garden, maybe the Louvre, Montmarte, and Musse des Arts et Meters. Then we head to Disneyland Paris.
Before kids we stayed in the Latin Quarter (twice) and near Gare du Nord and didn’t like it that much, then we stayed in Rue Cler and like the calm and peacefulness after a busy sightseeing day. The islands and near Luxembourg seem nice.

Agree, Gare du Nord area is not nice.
With $700/night you have options. Hope you find somewhere wonderful and you all have a great time.

Of the hotels found with Susan´s research, I can recommend Hotel le Six, and I am very surprised it has availability for July:

The Hotel des Deux-Iles is as centrally located as can be on Ile St. Louis. Not sure what their rates are now, but you can check it out using several web sites. There are also a couple of other hotels on the same street, and one of them is a sister hotel. If you cross the river you will be in the Marais -- cross it the other way and you'll be in The Latin Quarter. At the end of the island, you just have to cross the bridge, and you'll be at the back of Notre Dame -- such as it is now. At night it is a quiet, calm street with only moderate activity. The Metro is nearby so going anywhere is not a problem. There are several restaurants on the island. If you decided to stay there, we can steer you to a great little place for breakfast as all hotel breakfasts seem to be over priced for what one gets. We can also tell you about several places for lunch and / or dinner on the island as well.

Tocard, me too, surprised by all three 9 days out. All stellar hotels.

We haven’t stayed there yet but have reservations for Hotel Mansart in a few weeks. It’s across the street from the Ritz but much more budget friendly and has family rooms.

Consider Hôtel Square Louvois. It's between the Opéra and the Louvre on a lovely little square. They have a cool loft style room.

I’ve been pondering this all night, and I have to wonder if what you’ve done in the past has worked for you and you already have reservations there why not stick with a good thing?

Thanks everyone. The Hotel Le Six looks amazing, still trying to decide.
@Rosiecaro, my husband said the same thing! I think the reason I am wavering is the hotel was great when we were a couple without kids but not sure now. They like the idea of walking to the Eiffel Tower every night but I like the idea of having a comfortable hotel and being central.

I think you are overthinking this. Plus you already know the area. While Rue Cler is not my favorite area because of all the Americans there, I did stay there with my daughter once or twice. If your hotel is on the pedestrian area, it is a good place with kids...assuming those kids aren't preschoolers. They can go out on their own in the pedestrian section to the various shops. I think it would give elementary age kids a sense of freedom and maturity, depending on their ages as you don't say.

No place in central Paris is not central, IMO. Buses and Metro are everywhere. Plus the Eiffel Tower/Champ de Mars is somewhere you can repeatedly visit during one stay. Great people watching and fun. Staying next door to a museum is only worth one visit with kids. So I don't see the reason to be in that type of touristy area. Plus, Rue Cler places you nearer to the areas where Parisians live. No matter where you stay in Paris, walking is important to get a feel for what makes Paris wonderful. It is not necessarily the tourist sites.

We have stayed at Hotel Beaugency in the past. One street off Rue Cler. It's nothing special but the staff and breakfast are great.

Hi Suzann, where are you currently booked in the 7th? If your children are pre-schoolers, there is a small park behind Napoleon’s Tomb with some playground equipment.

We are booking at 7 Hotel Eiffel on Rue Amalie. Yes, I probably am over thinking it.

The 3 very nice hotels i listed above do.
The Luxembourg Gardens has a great playground, merry-go-round, marionnette shows, a café, bathrooms. It’s wonderful. My son grew up playing there, great way for him to meet and play with French kids. And why staying close to the LG when you have kids is a bonus.

Based on recommendations on this forum, we are booked in a hotel on L’Ile St Louis, early April 2024. Would love to get the breakfast and PM meals recommendations on the island. (Apologies for misspellings…need to tune up my French.) Merci!

Susan in Durham,

There are several place on Ile Saint-Louis to consider for eating. For breakfast there is a place named St. Regis at the end of the island closest to Notre Dame. Coffee, croissant, and juice for very little money. Plenty to get the day started. Even had a small plate of cold cuts and wine one evening. On the same street is Café Med which has a good lunch, but haven't had dinner there. Still farther down the same street is L'Orangerie & Auberge de la Reine Blanche which is good for a semi fancy dinner. Reservations are a good idea. And don't miss the chocolate ice cream which is in the same block (other side of the street) from L'Orangerie. If you fool around with google maps, you might be able to use street view and "walk" to them before you ever leave home.

That’s great Susan (Durham), you’ll love Ile St Louis. I don’t know what hotel, but Hotel St Louis en l’Ile has the best breakfast buffet we’ve ever had. Well worth the money - if you like having a full breakfast. Hotel de Lutèce and Hotel des Deux Iles (same owner) we also paid for breakfast and enjoyed it. For us, breakfast at the hotel is more convenient than going out.

Café Med, i agree, we love it. We eat there for dinner often. Three course dinner is like, €15. Dirt cheap. My favorite 3 courses are: soup (to die for), chicken curry & rice,, and Tarte Tatin 😋

Thanks very much TC and Susan(Marin)! We are in the Hotel St Louis—I think one of you recommended it in a previous post…and good news about the breakfast. Especially the first day…so nice to have great French coffee and a convenient meal to fix the jet lag. TC the quick breakfast place and other meal stops will work great. We are not in Paris for long so I expect some mornings we will start early.

Oh yes, Berthillon ice cream is mind blowing. Chocolate/raspberry sorbet are my favorites.

My favorite café is at the western tip of ISL, by the the pedestrian bridge, it’s called La Flore en l’Ile… it’s expensive but sitting at a table outside is the best people watching experience ever. It’s a Pinch Me, I Cannot Believe I’m Actually Here experience.

I always get Berthillon there, it’s more expensive to sit at a table to eat it, but very worth it to me.

There’s also an Amorino on ISL (they’re all over Paris) which has great gelato, but Berthillon is even better.
