Our road trip this year has us for 2 night in Nancy and Metz.
Does anyone have a suggestion for dining in either. We prefer small, quiet, not expensive (who doesn't). I just do not need fancy.
I'm not a vegetarian, but sadly Bouchons are not high on my list.
We drove over to Metz for a few days last December. Our best meal while there was at Maison Baci (cuisine italienne), located on Place Saint-Louis where rue de la Tête d'Or enters. I would recommend it.
In Nancy, try Aux Delices du Palais. Small, good value place in Grand Rue at the end near the Ducal Palace.
In Metz My favorite place to grab a bite is in the covered market, but that's closed by 1730. 'Assiette au Bœuf is okay, the prices are reasonable, and it has a great view of the Temple Neuf. I don't often recommend hotel restaurants, but La reserve at the Citadel is very nice. Not cheap, and you need reservations, but I like it. I've eaten at a couple other places but nothing stands out. I'm pretty easy and find a durum at the local kebab place is often enough.
In Nancy, again, the indoor market is quite nice. Of the places around the Place Stanislaus I think Michelangelo is best, but none are outstanding. My favorites are L'Arsenal (again not cheap, and you need reservations, but really good), and des Frères Marchand which is where I was sent by a local and which is worth the visit. I go back to both. The shops on the Grand Rue by des Frères Marchand are exceptional! This is my favorite corner of the old city.
In Nancy last year, my daughter and I had a terrific dinner here. It was one of the best meals we had in our two weeks in the region! https://www.louis-15.com
If you like Indian, we had a nice meal at RESTAURANT HARYANA in Metz in 2024, it’s on Rue des Roches and a few doors down from Hôtel de la Cathédrale.
This trip I spent over a week in Metz with a few repeated day trips to Nancy...great place.
The restaurant in Nancy may not fit your desire to have a quiet place to dine, it's packed which shows its popularity with locals and tourists. The patrons are mainly French, which is what you will hear totally.
This restaurant is "Brassierie Excelsior" located across from the train station with its unique decor and size of the establishment. From the photos displayed this establishment is a classic place.
