For anyone who has spent time in and ate around Colmar and Eguisheim, would it be crazy to adjust my itinerary and spend extra money on uber just to dine at Caveau Heuhaus? I am staying overnight in Colmar and naturally will eat a few meals in Colmar, but I have seen Caveau Heuhaus in Eguisheim come up over and over again on this forum, which piques my interest. Can I find similar food and quality in Colmar? The dishes look similar to lots of restaurant on a quick glance. I won’t have a car and plan to take the bus, but to dine in Caveau Heuhaus, I will have to come back to Colmar on Uber (if I can get one) as buses are not frequent. Is it worth the extra trouble and cost? Or should I stick to Colmar for meals? Thanks for your insight.
There are 10 Michelin rated places to eat in Colmar. If you're not a vegetarian I suggest trying Le Comptoir de Georges which specializes in Alsatian cuisine.
If all you want is a beer and a bite (say a tart flambe) try Au Bureau - Pub et Brasserie over by the movie theater outside the old town center.
If you really want to just chill a bit go to the indoor market, buy your favorites, and head for a bench in the Champ de Mars park.
Thanks KGC. I did not know that Colmar has so many Michelin starred restaurants. Unfortunately, because I am traveling with a young child, fine dining is out this trip. But your suggestion of Le Comptoir de Georges looks very good. Thank you
I can recommend Wistub Brenner in Colmar. Excellent Alsatian food. Reservations for dinner a must.
We ate at Caveau Heuhaus in May 2023 because we were staying in Eguisheim and it was one of the few restaurants in town that was open that day and not fully booked. We sat outside since that’s where the open table was and never went inside. By the time we left the restaurant was completely full. While the food was good I can’t say I’d make a special trip from Colmar just for dinner.
Most shops in town were closed by 6:30pm.
I'll echo the Winstub Brenner recommendation.
Would it be crazy? Yes.
Most of those Michelin restaurants are not in the city of Colmar.
If you want excellent Tarte Flambée, Restaurant La Soï. Very affordable and popular. Reservations required.
These are the 10 Michelin restaurants in Colmar:
Restaurant Girardin
Lucas et Chris
L'Atelier du Peintre
La Maison Rouge
Le Quai 21
Bord'eau
JY'S
Le Comptoir de Georges
Wistub Brenner
À l'Échevin
These are all an easy walk from the city center.
There are probably 150 places within a 1 hour drive. I can't recommend more than a dozen between Strasbourg, Freiburg, and Colmar. But I do get down there several times a year, and I'm working my way through my 2026 guide.
And Au Bureau is perfect for kids, no reservation required.
La Maison Rouge in Colmar was excellent, but you say you have a small child, so prolly not.
Sorry, KGC
I should have said there are not 10 Michelin starred restaurants in Colmar per the Op's response.
I did not know that Colmar has so many Michelin starred restaurants.
Thank you all. You have helped me decide not to eat in Eguisheim. Too much stress to arrange a uber for that.
Thank you all for the restaurant suggestions. Unfortunately I have to rule out fine dining and set menus. I have a few on my list now but need a couple more. Is the following any good?
Le Fer Rouge
Caveau Saint Jean
La Cochonaille
Meistermann
Les Bateliers (This one has a menu that looks like a tourist trap yet it has very high rating)
Thank you
Dana, the only restaurant on your list that I dined at in 2022 was Les Bateliers. I had just arrived in Colmar and they were one of the few restaurants open on a Monday night that had a table available without a reservation. The food was okay, not great, but the service was good. More memorable was the lovely couple from Sweden and their well behaved dog that I met when seated on the terrace by the water.
Make sure you understand there is a difference between a Michelin starred restaurant and being listed in the Michelin guide.
Not all restaurants in the Michelin guide are Michelin starred. Restaurants in the guide have been reviewed by Michelin. Starred restaurants are stand outs. They will be noted separately.
