Hello, I've read across the internet that it's a good idea to make a restaurant reservation when visiting the south of France. How far in advance do said reservations need to be made? Can we go the morning of the day we want to dine or should we book 3-4 weeks in advance? Merci!
I always make restaurant reservations, even in the north of France. For most restaurants, a few days in advance will usually suffice. Some restaurants will require more time.
It is always wise to reserve in France and more important in smaller towns than big cities. You will always find some mediocre place to walk in and be fed in Paris, but in smaller towns there may be 2 good places that book out nightly. In our experience and not talking about Michelin star places a day or two in advance in spring and fall and maybe a week or so in summer has worked, but it is probably locally varied. In St. Malo in May, a day in advance got us amazing meals and the days we hadn't booked we ended up in a so so pizza place and a really terrible touristy place. Once you know where you will want to eat go ahead and book. WE booked the day ahead in Arles, and in Dordogne villages and 3 or 4 days ahead when possible in Nice.
Great question! I will be watching. We will be there in late Sept for 21 days Paris to Nice following RS My Way Tour route.
