I need advice on using the RER from CDG to downtown Paris. The last time we did this, the route went thru some areas of suburban Paris where we frankly did not feel safe given our ages. It appears there are two routes downtown. Any advice?
There is only one route. Some trains are express, some aren't. I bet I am older than you are and we take it all the time. There is some risk of pickpockets on all Paris transport so don't be a walking buffet anywhere in Paris. There is some risk of snatch and grab on the RER if one leaves a bag, especially a purse or computer bag, unattended, so keep the valuables on your lap and don't sit right next to the door if concerned. You can wait for an express that doesn't stop until the Paris stops if you are really frightened, but in many trips we have never had problems. Thievery of small items is common but violent crime is almost non-existant in Paris.
Thanks. We will take the express train.
Another option is a taxi. More expensive but safer and you don't have to drag your luggage over uneven pavement and up stairs.
You're already spending a lot of money on the trip, so maybe a little more to make it more pleasant isn't a bad use of money.
Just a thought.
Concur with Kent. It costs 20 Euro for two by train; about 50 by cab. If frightened a cab is the 'safe' bet.
pm,
I'm also somewhat "older" and haven't had any issues (so far) using the RER. As long as you're not disembarking in the suburban areas you mentioned, you shouldn't have any problems. While it's not uncommon for thieves and scammers to operate on those trains, if you watch your luggage closely your ride should be uneventful.
You could also take the Roissy Bus to Paris Opera and then a Taxi from there to your hotel. You might find it helpful to have a look at the excellent parisbytrain.com website, as there's a lot of good information there. Another option would be a pre-booked Shuttle direct to your hotel (there are LOTS of them).
Thanks for the several helpful responses to this post on chosing the express train, considering a cab or the Roissy bus.
I am curious as to why you felt unsafe as the RER went through some suburban areas.
Cause they saw poor people, crappy apartment buildings , etc.. it looks sketcky,, but you aren't getting out.. so just consider it an interesting view.. Most big cities have areas like that on outskirts.. ever been outside Rome..... or inside Miami.. I had never ever seen houses with bars on them before we went to Miami about 20 years ago!
Try the blue van shuttle...cheaper than taxi and takes you door to door...better rate fro round trip. Have used 3 times.
