Requesting itinerary input for France trip

Hi, we're just starting to plan our 2016 trip to France. I received some great ideas for some small villages for our Germany/Austria trip this year, so appreciate any feedback on our initial thoughts for 2016.

3-week trip maximum. We've been to Paris, Normandy & Avignon area. We enjoy museums, exploring old historical city centers, biking, cooking classes or similar small group activities. We travel solely by train (or bus) and enjoy experiences of small villages & cities such as Paris.

Fly into & out of Paris (usually fly open-jaw but hubby will be using Delta miles, and connections back from Marseilles with miles aren't desirable)

Land in Paris
Stay at Fontainebleau - 2 nights
Paris - 4 nights
Strasbourg/Colmar - 2 nights
Lyon - 4 nights
Annecy area - 2 or 3 nights
Aix-en-Provence - 2 or 3 nights
TGV back to Paris
Could stay north of Paris for a couple of nights before flying home?

Thanks for any ideas!

How are you planning to get from CDG to Fountainbleau? Since you are not driving, will you go into Paris, then to Gare de Lyon and take the 30 minute train trip to Fountainbleau? I went directly from CDG to Fountainbleau a few years ago, but I hired a car to take me. Took around 45 minutes to 1 hour as I recall, and of course was not cheap. It may be preferable to go into Paris for 6 nights and do a day trip to Fountainbleau (I assume you mainly want to go to the chateau?). This is easy to do. I don't think you need to spend 2 nights there, unless there are other activities you want to do there.
Also, as for Aix-en-Provence, again since you will not have a car, this town alone does not require 3 nights, in my opinion. It is very nice and has a great outdoor marche, it's big, and one of the best I have been to in Europe. The old town section is very charming and good for shopping and walking, but there are no really important historical or architectural sights, it's basically good for shopping, hanging in cafes, and the marche --- so you may not need more than a day or perhaps 2 here, in my opinion. A couple of months ago I stayed at the Hotel St. Christophe in Aix, a Rick Steves recommendation, it was a perfect location, and I highly recommend it too.

I don't know if I agree with the previous posters, maybe 2 nites in Fontainebleau would be right for you. You have travelled before, you know what you'll see/do. Where I would take issue is the land in Paris and stay in Fontainebleau part. That's a fair amount for one day when you just got off a plane since it will involve a few changes of train or bus. And planes can be late which makes the timing a bit tricky if you're going to a B&B or similar small place.

It's not tricky to get to Fontainebleau from CDG. You can take the Air France bus to Gare de Lyon and then catch the next train. It's a local commuter train, so not a big deal. As for Aix, I assume it's your base for day trips to Marseille, Cassis, hiking etc. and that you're not just hanging in Aix the whole time.

Thanks for your replies!

We'll be coming to Paris on a non-stop from Seattle, arriving in early morning. We don't mind taking trains, etc. the first day to wake up at our first location the next morning. We survived landing in Zurich one year and taking 4 trains to arrive at Wengen for our 1st night! We've been to Paris several times, so it's not the prominent location of this trip.

The plans for Aix-en-Provence are fuzzy right now so appreciate your comments. And, thank you for the hotel recommendation!

I haven't been northeast of Paris. Any places we should consider?
