Repercussions resulting from new administration?

Traveling to Paris and heart of France beginning of May. In general, how are the French reacting to visitors from the US since our current administration took over?

Probably about the same as when any new administration takes over. Go and enjoy yourself.

I shall see about that when I get back to France at the end of May.

Regardless, this has no effect on my travel plans in Europe this summer, which includes staying at least 15 nights in Paris, consecutively or not.

There’s been a few discussions about this.

You might well be asked about politics because people do care and are interested. In fact, I’d expect to be asked. It’s been noted previously that politics is not off limits for Europeans while I get the impression it is in the US based on what people have posted here. However, you as an individual will not be judged negatively because of the political situation in your home country.

Fine. In the past week two different French persons have told me they'd like to visit the US. I live in France, speak fluent French, answer that I'm originally from the US when asked about my slight accent, and nobody raises an eyebrow.

I live in Europe. I am an American. I have a social life in Europe. I eat out or get a glass of wine in places i am known at least 3 times a week ... okay four. In January I visited a neighboring country that is a primary topic of current politics. To date, one close friend has asked me how I feel about things in the states. It was a 3 minute conversation. As a tourist in France i would expect less. We really aren't as important to the average European as we think we are. Oh and I know 2 people who have visited the US on holiday since November and 2 more going this summer.

And for some reason you are assuming that the majority of vocal French citizens have some issue with current American politics. I don't know, but it may assume a lot to think like that.

I guess your knowledge of French will allow you to avoid most discussions about politics. Otherwise in France it's easy: move on to a food topic. :)

During the previous administration, I got asked maybe 4 times in 4 years. None were complementary questions. I just smiled and said something to the effect of, our government will shine in the best and survive the worst. Back up plan was to toast "God Bless America" and change the subject.

Probably not an issue as a tourist and interacting with the French. However, internally I would and will be a bit embarrassed to be an American. I do not treat my friends in certain ways as is seemingly now the treatment between countries.

I think you have to realistically assess what interactions you will have with typical French citizens.

You certainly will engage with hotel employees, waiters, cab drivers, tour guides, shop keepers, and other service employees, but they will not go beyond idle chit-chat.

In my experience, people I meet in various countries simply do not start talking about things if they do not know you, different from the US, where you can stand in line with a stranger and know their whole life story in about 10 minutes. However, the one place these discussions do happen is at a communal table, over a meal, or in a bar/beerhall. Then, surprisingly, politics is fair game, and a popular subject.

So I do not think you will notice anything, maybe there will be some type of protest here or there, either about the US, the French Governments actions in relation to the US, or other topics. If you do interact with locals, the topic might come up, more out of curiosity,

Go, have fun, be polite.

Once again, I've needed to remove posts. Do not engage in politics, do not infer on your own politics. It is really hard to keep arguments off our forum as any bit of political reference can lead a thread into a downward spiral.

I'm allowing this sort of question because it is of concern to many right now, and answers need to stick to how it affects travel without any wanderings into the politics. Thank you to all those who have been helpful without engaging in the politics despite the context.

I believe the OP has enough relevant answers, so I'm closing the thread to avoid issues.
