How many is we i.e. how large an apartment do you need? What is your budget? Also, it's Marais not maria.

As in marshes not madonnas. both of these areas are lovely although note that many apartment owners stretch the truth on something being in the Marais or not and there are better and worse streets to be on in both districts. They are both good bases for a first visit.

The correct address is rivoli68.fr.

A friend and I found a great apartment through Homeaway.com.
We liked the idea of going through an agency because you can use a credit card and if there are issues your credit card company might be useful.
The site has hundreds of listings in all neighborhoods with maps and photos and good descriptions.
We were very satisfied.

And virtually all the listing on this and other sites are illegal. (i.e. AirBNB and Homeaway and VRBO)

The hotel Roi De Sicile is a legally licenced apart'hotel.
So is Hotel Residence Henri IV, which is in the Latin Quarter.

Janet probably meant Home Away. It and VRBO are only listing sites, do no verification, so if something goes wrong, you lose. It's no different from Airbnb. I would use only a dependable agency such as lodgis.com. They inspect and photograph every apartment personally and stay within the law. The others use the owners' photos and descriptions, which don't always jive with reality--personal experience.

Bets - I have serious questions about lodgis.com...
Residents do not actually live in those apartments, so how can they be legal?
Some of them are rented with a one-year lease, but others are not.

I've seen of many Lodgis apartments that are occupied and available only when the usual occupant is away, or the person will move out for a few days to make some money. The last time I looked at their site, they showed time limits on the availability, which was a new twist, and many more looked occupied. They also rent unfurnished longer-term. I think they are too large to skirt the law at this point, but I'll take another look.

However, living atop another person's clothes and personal effects wouldn't be my choice.

And the travel community waits.

Can't tell. They show limited availability, which could coincide with an occupant's vacation away, but they do indeed look devoid of personal belongings. Now one has to send requests for more info. Dave--your wait is over.

I tried renting from lodgis before I moved to my new apartment.
All of the apartments I saw were totally unoccupied.

Good luck. Paris is the main place I worry about renting an apartment. The city seems to always try to shut down apartment rentals, sometimes with more gusto than others.

As far as the neighborhoods go, either would be very good. I'd suggest mapping the location on Google maps. There is a big difference between something that is on the outer edge of a district and one that is close enough to be walking distance to many sights.

Lets see JHK there will only be two of us. My husband and myself. Also I did not say that It is October of 2018. Sorry for not putting that out there.
Also JHK and Jean -Paul do you have a contact for the place on rivoli?
Dave I am in Georgia, Cartersville

It is highly possible that the owner or agency will not have the calendar available for 2018.
It is also highly possible that the owner or agency might not have gotten the registration number needed to list vacation apartments on the internet.

I think it's way too early to book an apt 16 mos out. 9-12 mos ahead will be possible.

Unless there's some major event happening (and I think Fashion Week is typically in September, maybe sometimes the very early part of October), I don't see a reason to book a place this far in advance for a trip you won't take until late 2018. I don't even know that apart'hotel chains (like Citadines) would be taking reservations this far in advance, so I'd at least wait until October or November of this year before you contact anyone. If it's just you and your spouse, I would consider doing an apart'hotel as they are very consistent and professionally managed and run.

That said, I've done apart'hotels, worked directly with rental agencies and also rented apartments in various cities via VRBO, Airbnb and FlipKey.

We stayed in a VRBO last summer in Paris in the Marais. Good sized place and well located, but we were a group of 5 so needed a larger place and also wanted one with A/C (which we did find - albeit, not central a/c, it was mutliple portable a/c units - we used them a total of 1 day on our trip as the weather briefly was hot). In October, I sincerely doubt you will need the A/C.

Know it's your first time visiting, but do take into account there are other equally good (and often more charming) areas to stay in aside from Latin Quarter and Marais. As long as you are near a Metro station, you're good to go.

I love the Latin Quarter and Marais... find them and the 6th (St Germain) extremely charming. And central.

Thank you everyone, I am sorry I guess I got excited and ahead of the game. We just confirmed our time in Dordogne.
We will be staying there a week in October6-13 2018 at La Roque-Gageac and are thinking of doing a week in Paris before we go there. So, yes Jumped the Gun. I hope you all will be available for your great advice and comments in late November.
Chexbres thank you for the link to the apartment/hotel. That looks like could definitely meet our needs. Do you prefer one hotel over the other. Sorry not trying to book just appreciated your input. Really we have no idea where to stay, we love walking and doing trains or not foreign to my husband originally from NY the city. Manhattan, if easy to negotiate and understand . Not a problem. The link your trip adviser gave and in reviews seems like the owners are very helpful for newbies. Anyway. Again thanks to all for comments. Will be reposting again at end of year. Have a great summer. Yes, I have already ordered Rick Steves book on Paris and one on France. Thank you all again for someone who is just excited about coming to your country or country you have visited and loved

The location of Hotel Roi de Sicile is convenient, but so is the Hotel Residence Henri IV.

If you prefer the very crowded section of the Marais - which this hotel is located in - you might enjoy the hustle-and-bustle. Plus, shops traditionally open around noon on Sunday. This area can be noisy, but the hotel has double-glazed windows. Narrow sidewalks, practically no trees, too many people in one place at one time.

The Hotel Residence Henri IV is located on a quiet cul-de-sac near the Cluny Museum.
Lots of transportation options, lots of roomy sidewalks and trees, lots of shopping and places to eat that are better than what the Marais has to offer these days.

I have stayed in the 15th arrondissement twice, and again this fall, renting from VRBO. I love the Eiffel Tower and want to watch the sunset and perhaps sunrise over the Tower. I also stayed in the 5th, near rue Mouffetard twice and enjoyed it immensely. The street is a market street in a very old part of the city. 20-ish minutes walk to Norte-Dame cathedral. There are many cafes and restaurants near there. I easily took the RERB and bus to my rental there.

I have a wonderful memory of waking very early on my first morning in Paris and entering the Notre Dame Cathedral as the doors opened! A few devout locals attended a service in the centre of the church as I and a couple of other tourists with big cameras had the place to ourselves. The vacuum cleaner was being put away as we entered. The doors opened at 0800.

In the 15th, I stayed near the Champs du Mars park, so near the Eiffel Tower. The twice weekly Grenelle market by the Motte-Piquet-Grenelle metro is great! The Monoprix store, by that metro has a supermarket on the second floor and a clothing store on the main floor, great place! I purchased a lot of picnic food there and more.

Feel free to p.m. Me if you have questions about the rentals. Have a great trip.
