Rental car size and a couple other questions

I am planning a 2week vacation in France in the 2nd half of May. Part of the plan is to rent a car for 3 days and drive from Annecy to Nice via the Route Napoleon. Anyone have any experience with a midsize rental like a Peugeot 3008 being able to ‘comfortably’ fit 4 5’8 to 5’10 adults plus 4 22” carryon suitcases and probably 4 backpacks? I would love to get away with a midsize due to the cost but we don’t want to be packed in like sardines...to old for that. If we can get the 4 suitcases in the back plus a couple of the backpacks that would be good enough.

2 - May want to drive from Annecy to Geneva to drop off someone at the airport and then return to Annecy. Is there any issue driving across the border? We do plan to get the international permit thing.

3 - how far in advance can you book Tvg train tickets? A couple months? Planning to take the train to Annecy from Paris on Sunday May 24. Can I assume if I look at a schedule for a Sunday in February it should be the same for May 24?

4 - is there some website where future planned strike days are published?

Thanks!

Thanks!

C'est la grève lists upcoming strikes in France. It is only in French, but is a simple enough website that Google Translate will suffice for a general idea. Remember that dates are given in DD/MM/YYYY format.

If you drive across the Swiss border, remember that if you drive on any motorway in Switzerland -- including Swiss motorway A1 which is the most direct route from Annecy to Geneva International Airport -- you will need a vignette. The only option is a yearly vignette for CHF40 (about US$41). If you are caught driving without a vignette on a Swiss highway there is a fine of CHF200 (US$205).

If you don't want to pay for the Swiss vignette, which is totally understandable if you are just driving in to drop a friend off at the airport, set your GPS/navigation system to avoid highways and tolls, though of course it will be a slower route once in Switzerland.

For rental car capacity, passengers and luggage, go to AutoEurope.

I just checked the Auto France web site and the 3008 will easily carry you and your luggage. The problem is that with a rental, let's hope you will actually get a 3008 as opposed to the "or similar vehicle" defined in the fine print of rental contracts. Good move getting an IDP, you probably won't need it but if the wrong thing happens, you will be very glad you have one ... just like insurance. We have leased 308's for the past few years and have found them to be quite comfortable.

Crossing the border is no big deal. At the border you have the option of buying a Swiss autobahn vignette ($40+/-) to allow you to drive on their autobahns. You should be able to get to the Geneva Airport without needing one but double check your route since they enforce the law using roadside cameras and the tickets are not cheap.

We rented a midsize from EuropeCar at Orly airport and got a Mazda X5. We had 4 people, 4 carryon suitcases, 1 28” suitcase, and three backpacks. We kept one backpack in the backseat, and everything else fit in the trunk. We couldn’t cover the trunk, so we didn’t make any stops along the way.

On a previous trip, we rented an estate car (Opel Insignia), which has bigger cargo space. We had two 28” suitcases and 3 carryons, plus 3 backpacks in the trunk.

Here's a map showing 3 different ways to get to the Geneva Airport. https://www.chamonix.net/sites/default/files/Attachments/access-routes-to-geneva-airport.pdf
If you're going to drop someone off at the main terminal, there is a route that will enable you to get there and avoid the vignette by avoiding the motorway. If you will be dropping someone off at the French sector of the airport, there is a route that will enable you to do that w/o entering Switzerland.

Enough for four 22 inch plus backpacks? Take a look. You may have to take off the boot cover (if that's possible). Generally you can't put heavy things on top of the cover (light things like a sweater, umbrella or guidebook are usually fine).
