I'm taking the TGV from Paris to Rennes and want to rent a car in Rennes for a few days. Is there a car rental place at or near the train station?
Also - do I need an international driver license? I googled and got mixed answers.
Google it and you will see many, including all the biggies.
Since an IDP acts as an official translation of your drivers license, it can't hurt to have one.
We just rented at Rennes train station. All the big name companies are there down the stairs . Beautiful modern train station too.
Sam is correct about the International Driving Permit. There is no international driving "license". You need to have your home state license, and as he said, an IDP. Easily available at a AAA office, about $20.00 and a photo needed. AAA will probably take it for about $8.00. Good for one year.
I've rented and returned cars in Rennes many, many times. Be aware that (1) while the offices are in the station, the cars are at the top of a parking lot next door, about 5-10 min away depending on your navigation skills and (2) Rennes traffic can be surprisingly bad for a city of this size, so allow extra time for return if it's not the weekend (better traffic). Once, I had to drop off my colleagues at the metro station so that they could make it in time for their train (and I didn't, being stuck with the car).
We're renting a car in Rennes via Enterprise. Near the gare.
We rented a car at Rennes train station last April. All the major companies are at the train station. Very convenient. (But agree with others that finding the offices then where the cars are took a few minutes to find.)Yes you need an international driver's permit. Even though it's in the event you need to show it to authorities; the Enterprise rental agency guy asked to see it when we arrived as well.
