Rent car in Bayeux, drop at Rennes train station?

I'm considering renting a car in Bayeux, driving to Mont Saint-Michel, then driving to Rennes, returning car near the train station, and taking the train to Montparnasse.

While this looks good on paper, I suspect I'll run into lots of hurdles - the first one being a car rental agency that will allow pick up in Bayeux, return in Rennes.

Before I re-invent the wheel on this, has anybody found a rental agency that will accomadate this request? If so, please let me know.

Thanks

No hurdles, except pick up the car in Caen which has many more car company rental choices. Bayeux is very small. The return fee to a different location within France is nominal. We took the train to Rennes, picked up the car there and returned in Lille before heading Belgium on the train. We used Enterprise but you could look at AutoEurope as well. Also try to avoid Sundays on either end as hours range from closed to very limited hours in France except at the Paris airports.

I agree with picking up in Caen. There are many more options there than Bayeux. I personally have rented in Rennes and returned in Caen using both Hertz and Enterprise. A couple of things of which to be aware:

  • Many rental companies will charge an additional fee for separate cites. Not outrageous, but you should know this while making your plans.
  • Most rental car companies are closed either for a long lunch, or all day on Sunday. I have dropped off after hours using a key drop off. But make sure you take very thorough pictures of the car before leaving just in case.

In fact, I had to rent in Rennes a day early last year because the rental offices in Saint-Malo or Rennes were all closed when I was scheduled to arrive.

All (or at least most) car rental companies have free drop off at another town within the same country. My recommendation is Europcar just across street from Caen station.
