We are staying 3 days in Paris in Sept, then heading to Chartres to see the cathedral then to Loire valley. My original plan was to take a train to Chartres and renting a car there before moving on. The Avis rental at the train station is closed on Sat so I would have to look around more. Should I rent the car in Paris instead? How hard is it to drive out of Paris? We are staying in Marais district. Thanks!

Hello from Wisconsin,
One trip to Chartres my wife and I rode the train to Chartres spent a few days with our friend Ms. Sylvie Menard and her B&B, then hopped into a hired a car in Chartres. Don't be hesitant to rent from French companies. Or to take the train further and rent there. We drove around before returning it to Clermont-Ferrand ( a VERY difficult return it turns out) and taking the train back into Paris. If you approach CDG airport carefully, it is easy to return a car. Go slow and follow the signposts for car return (in French...look that up. It might be retour de voiture). You can even Google a person's private video of returning a rental. It is quite good.
I drove out of Paris once. Won't do it again. I even rented the car a ways out of the dense city center. But my wife and I like to relive the experience with friends every now and then. I have driven a lot in Europe. And really, how hard can it be to drive in Paris?. I mean they don't want to hit you any more than you want to hit them...they stop for stop lights, they yield to pedestrians...Come on how hard can it be? Well let me tell you. From Foch Ave. to out of congestion was the harriest driving I have ever done. I just took the first interstate type road that came along and figured we could work things out once we got out alive. Amazingly, it was the road we desired. And so it goes.
I am jealous. 3 days of September in Paris in the Marais. There is my favorite bakery, boulangerie, is at the east end of St Croix de Bretonnerie. Give it a try for pastreries, or bread, or at noon for sandwiches. They don't speak English. And a nice restaurant with fine food and reasonable evening prices is 'the bull dog', le bouledogue. They start serving at 8 PM. A bit hard to find but is on a main street not too far from the Center Pompidou. North a block and then toward the Marias.
Try searching using Autoeurope. And if you don't like poking around on the computer. call them. Tell them what you would like to do and ask what they can do for you. I have found their advise absolutely on the mark. "Don't rent there, go over her, it is easier to get to from your apartment/hotel." really, that sort of thing.

Thanks for the recommendations!
I would rent a car near Porte d´Orléans. You can enter onto A6 without touching the périphérique and be on your way quickly, taking A6 to A10 and using the Chartres exit.
Alternatively, you could rent a car at Orly airport which is along A6 but there would be a train station/airport pickup surcharge of approximately 40€, paid at drop off.
If you were to rent from Chartres and you need a vehicle with automatic transmission, of which there are few in France, I would call the rental office a day or two in advance to confirm availability.
With any car rental, take time in advance to refer to route maps and have a good familiarity with the required route:
If you approach CDG airport carefully, it is easy to return a car. Go slow and follow the signposts for car return (in French...look that up. It might be retour de voiture).
All the rental return signs at CDG are written in both French and English.
