Renoir at the Musee d'Orsay

I visited this exhibition this past Saturday morning (28 March), with a 0930 entry time.

Due to construction the timed entry lines from up at the quay entrance, down the block from the "old" entrance. There are two lines, one for entry on the hour, the other for entry on the half hour. Check the head of the line for which to queue in. Lines form up early, but if you get in line more than one hour early you'll be sent back. The lines are long, and there's no place to sit.

People without a timed entry queue through a maze near the old entry, across from the Legion of Honor. That's another long line. All the statues that used to be on the plaza are removed.

If you plan to store you coat, bags, etc. the lockers are back by the original entrance. You'll have to walk the length of the museum to do this.

The Renoir Exhibit has two parts, one dedicated to his drawings, which is very interesting as they have studies placed around the finished works. The second part of the exhibit is mainly the paintings, grouped by time and subject. These rooms are the most popular. By 1030 this exhibit was so crowded it was difficult to enjoy a view of any picture for more than a minute.

If you go, don't forget to go up to the 5th floor (the Impressionists section) as they still have the Renoir's from the permanent collection in place up there. Note that this area is also very popular and gets crowded, especially with tour groups and students.

The museum shop, which is "normally" in the area under construction is now spread out into several rooms.

Thanks so much for the update! I wondered how the temporary entrance was going to work. It must put you in right near the escalator up to the 5the floor?

Glad you enjoyed the exhibition and good to know about the crowds.

KGC,

I might have messed up.

I pre-purchased tickets to D'Orsay at 9:30 and Renoir at 10:00 -- can I access the Renoir exhibit from inside the museum, or do I have to exit and go back outside and get in line there?

Any insight you have would be welcome.

Thanks,

Mike, I think you bought twice as many tickets as you need. Once you're inside the museum you should be able to see the Renoirs without a separate ticket. Certainly no one checked me for anything other than the entry. Get inside and you should be fine. The line for the 0930 entry started lining up at 0900.

The quay entrance is by what I consider the Art Nouveau corner, with all the fantastic furnishings. Do the Renoir on the ground floor first, before it really gets crowded.

I agree with KGC about the special exhibition, ticketing and the entrance to it.

Here is the link to the map on the Musee d'Orsay website. It unfortunately has not been updated to what the current conditions are BUT....where you will come in is the diagonal striped area on Floor 0. The Renoir exhibitions are in the light pink areas on the left side of that floor.

Pam and KGC,

Yeah, looks like I bunged up by buying an extra ticket. Oh well, the money is going to a good cause.

Thanks for the information; merci beaucoup!

Hi everyone, I bought the Carte Blanche (museum membership) which supposedly allows me to enter the Renoir exhibit at any time. I'm wondering, though, if that means I'll have to line up with other folks who don't have timed entry tickets, spending an hour plus in line? If that' s the case I'll happily spend the extra $ for a timed entry ticket. Just curious if folks know what the rules are in this case. Thanks.

No. The Carte Blanche entrance is at the front of the building during this process. Last Fall when I used it I showed it to the line attendant and was ushered into a lane with no one in it. There was also a separate Carte Blanche line for the Sargent exhibition which had no one in it. I expect the same for the Renoir. You will be treated well with this card and will not have to stand in an hour’s long line.

When are you traveling? I’lll be there in a couple weeks and can post my experience.

Editing to add: i have the link saved showing the entry info for the Carte Blanche so will try to find it tomorrow when I’m at a keyboard.
