Reims to Colmar and Strasbourg schedule - help needed

We have 5-6 days to travel from Reins where we arrive at 1.50pm end June. Is it really worth staying more than a day there when we have so much we'd like to see in a shoret time. We had planned originally on hiring a car on leaving Reims to drive to Nancy or is that heaps to see on the way and would a train be ok. The travel time is meant to be about the same. I've suggested Nancy cause it's 230 km away and we have to sleep somewhere. Or if we drove would it be better to stay at Metz. I like the small town/ villages rather than the large cities all the time. Strasbourg was the next stop before Colmar and I know there are lovely villages between Strasbourg and Colmar where a car is ideal. Whether we get to Mulhouse or not, is it worth a visit and I'd love to go toBasel in Switzerland but not enough time.
The plan at this stage was to get the TGV from Strasbourg to Paris later in the day.
Any help concerning our schedule and stops , and car versus train, wpeither some of the way, would be much appreciated as I'm running out of time. Central accommodation in Reims, not too far from the train station, is quite difficult to find. Will I need to book ahead in other places ir not. I am normally quite it gained but cNt get this route sorted, according to what are the best places to see and stay.
Thanks so much for any suggestions.

Nancy has a well-preserved Renaissance old town and many wonderful art nouveau buildings from the early 20th century. Metz is more Renaissance in nature - it has one of the best preserved old city centres in France because it was under German rule when many French cities were being redeveloped in the Hausmann style.

Mulhouse is only worth visiting if you are interested in either road or rail transportation - it has the French national museums of cars and railways which are both huge and international-level contenders.
