I am trying to find out about the regional train to Avignon from Paris...is it the TER of intercities....how long would it take which route would be the most scenic...any info will be appreciated...have spent a couple of hours on the computer with no luck..
Any reason you wouldn't take the much-faster TGV trains? Trying to save money?
The regional was recommended as a more scenic route... is that the case??thank you..
According to Bahn.com (German train site), you can travel from Paris Bercy to Avignon with a change in Lyon Part Dieu; both are TER regional trains. Travel time is a little over eight hours total vs. about three hours with TGV. I love trains, but I'd probably not take the much slower train. I guess you could overnight in Lyon to split it up. I took the TGV from Arles (stop in Avignon) to Paris last May - very scenic between Avignon and Lyon.

There's more of it, so there is bound to be more scenery.
Or you could actually be in Provence in 3 hours, and enjoy the scenery up close and personal.
Very true, a lot to consider.
Best reason I can see is if TGV is on strike and the other trains are not. I may have to keep this in mind for scheduled strike date May 19!
French rail strikes will affect all trains, not just TGV.
The reason someone might say that the regional train is more scenic is because at its slower speed you can actually see the scenery. I've been on TGVs where the countryside whizzes by so fast you can't see anything. But given the difference between 8 hours and 3 hours, I'd take the TGV,
I get it...thanks for your input
