We will be in Paris for several days prior to the RS Best of Eastern France tour and are interested in going to Versailles and the Louvre while we are there for tours. Does anyone have any recommendations on good tour groups for these destinations?
I don't recall which tour company I used for Versailles, but I'm guessing they're all pretty much the same. We had a bus meet up somewhere in Paris that took us out to Versailles where we were taken through tons of rooms that were filled with gold. It got boring after a while. The Hall of Mirrors was kind of cool, as well as the garden. However, since it was early March, if memory serves, nothing was blooming.
Overall, I don't think Versailles was worth the time or money, TBH.
I did book a tour for the Louvre, but unfortunately I overslept and missed the meet up. I ended up wandering around there on my own, which was equally cool. They have a great little cafe in there as well.
We booked 2 tours and completed them 3 weeks ago.
Versailles with Vincent from Tour by Locals. This was a private tour. He picked us up from our hotel and drove us to Versailles. He already purchased our timed tickets. We saw the palace rooms, gardens, (saw running water fountain synced to music), Grand Trianon, Petit Trianon, and hamlet. He suggested a nice quiche place after the tour. There are also other options where you arrive there by RER train. I found that having a personal and knowledgeable tour guide really brought the palace to life. Vincent was very knowledgeable about the history of the palace.
Louvre with Catherine Chartier from Tour by Locals. This was a private tour. She is a portrait artist who gave an insightful tour of the paintings in the Louvre. We had gone to the Louvre before and wanted to just focus on paintings this time. She was an excellent historian and gave an excellent tour from an art perspective.
