Recommended RS Paris Bus #

Remember reading Rick's suggestion for bus route that gives a good view of city but can't remember # or details. Any help appreciated. Just arrived and didn't bring book with me....too heavy for traveling light. Thanks in advance.

It's been the #69, which runs from near Rue Cler to Pere Lachaise.
However, some of the Paris bus routes changed in the last week so I can't promise that this bus is still the same.
And I heard from a friend that the on line route maps last week were very messed up.
Perhaps your hotel can help you or the Paris public transportation web site has been updated now.
And it would be great if you could let us know!

The No. 42 is (was?) another good sightseeing bus, if you board it behind Gare du Nord, so as to get a seat.

If you do this, do it at the end of the line because seats on buses are hard to come by -- and get one far back so you will not be among the first to need to give up your seat to elderly or disabled persons. In my experience of the buses, most of the seats are needed for elderly/disabled people because they cannot use the metro. I am 75 and I had to get up and give my seat to others a couple of times this past month because they clearly were in more need than I. If you are standing crushed in the middle of the crowded bus, you won't be enjoyed sightseeing much. If you are in a seat at a less crowded time it can be fun although I'd probably pay for a two hour Foxity bus tour and sit on the top of the bus and enjoy the overview.

The #42 now starts at the Gare St-Lazare but follows the same route past the old line end to Boulogne ile Seguin leading to this

If you decide to take a trip on the #69 remember that because the route is so long the trips are frequently cut short because of the traffic. Because of its route, this particular bus is crowded and slow. I think RS made this suggestion years ago, when buses were not as crowded as they are now. As a population ages, fewer and fewer people can use the metro. If you are interested in seeing a different, modern, now Paris, the trams around the edges are good viewing posts.

Some #69 buses terminate service at Chatelet, so be sure to check the signage on the bus before boarding; otherwise, you might find yourself wondering why everyone else is getting off in the middle of the route.

A really special trip on the #69 is to take it just before dark to the end of the line at Champs de Mars, get off and walk over to where you can see the Eiffel Tower sparkle. There are lots of oither people there and the atmosphere is festive. When you are ready, walk across the street to take the bus back. I also enjoyed watching the city at night while riding the bus. Sometimes, you can even catch a glimpse of the inside of apartments, and it is fun seeing the lit up cafes with people sitting outside.

For seeing the tower at night as noted above, with the bus change, the #86 has extended its route to the Champ de Mars, passing the Bon Marche and Ecole Militaire.
