we are driving through Provence for beginning of trip for 14 days then have 5 extra days before having to be in Mainz Germany. The must see villages and sights.

This is such a rich route that it would be helpful to know your interests. Wine, architecture, art museums, Black Forest, Roman towns, medieval villages, World Wars, Michelin 3-star restaurants?

From Nice, rent a car and take the road to ventimiglia, via colle di Tende, breil sur roya, cuneo, Torino, Valle d'aosta. Aosta is a very nice little town. Torino is worth a visit and it houses the most beautiful egyptian art museum after Cairo. Breil is a wonder of nature. you will be going through the Alps mountains, and have many spectacular views throughout your journey to Aosta, then you will pass the customs to Switzerland. Lugano, Locarno, Luzern are wonderful little towns.
Geneva and Zurich are cities.
