Should we find a hotel "intra muros", or perhaps a hotel a bit to the east, on the sea front? We've never been there before. We'll be visiting just for a night in late April of 2017. Thanks for any ideas you'd like to share!
I stayed in intra muros in a great B&B called Accroche Couer hosted by Nathalie and her husband.Being inside the wall has you close to the sights as well as ease of walking the wall and the great views that it provides and many dining options available.

Both solutions have their plus. Intra-muros will be pleasant to be right in the middle of the most historical area, with more restaurants and bars round the corner. But if you have a car, it's advisable to park just outside intra-muros (it's right by the walls, but not for free from April. Or you can park just a bit further, which is usually possible in April).
Along the sea front (le sillon), you can enjoy good views, it's easier to park your car. There are restaurants as well, but generally upper-class. Some of them are only 5-10 minutes walking to the intra-muros.
Thank you, Mike and korriganed for your input. We're arriving at St. Malo via the ferry from Portsmouth UK. I think we'll stay "intra muros". I'll definitely check out the place you recommended. Thanks again!
Seadog1001,
We just returned from France and spent a night in the Hotel Quic en Groigne on the Rue d'Estrees in the intra muros (top rated on Trip Advisor). It's located near the Plage du Mole, which is not too far from the ferry terminals, if I am looking at the map correctly. The hotel is newly renovated, on a quiet street, and has underground parking (15 euro). Our room, while small, was clean with comfortable beds. The staff was cordial and accommodating, and the breakfast was good. We would stay there again.
We stayed at the Mercure outside the city walls. The room was large and well furnished. Our room had a nice ocean view. The restaurant was also good. Since we had a car, it was also easier to get a parking place.
There were lots of pictures of storms along the coast. You could see how easy it would be to have the waves come over the sea walls.
We did sight see within the walls and had dinner in a restaurant that used the city wall as one of its walls.
