We are heading to the Dordogne region for 6 days. Can anyone recommend places that are not too touristy? We plan to visit the main sites/places, but would also like to visit places that are off the beaten path. Also, does anyone have accomodation recommendations? We would love to stay somewhere special for 2-3 nights. Thank you!
Which week? The amount of tourists very much depends on when you are there. I was there for the last week of June/1st week of July and we felt like we had the region to ourselves.
We just got in tonight. We're staying in Besse en Chandesse tonight, which is near the beginning of the Dordogne river. Our plan to to head towards Sarlat tomorrow.
We found this site, North of the Dordogne, very helpful in planning our time in the region.
We spent a week in the Dordogne this spring, based in Beynac. Here's my blog post that covers the second half of that week; the first half is in the prior post. http://mainelywinenews.blogspot.com/2016/04/end-of-week-in-dordogne.html
We spent a week in September in Cadouin and enjoyed it; there are lots of small villages in the region. It is heavily settled by British ex pats and heavily touristed. ANyplace that has a bakery will be 'touristy' during the season. It is a beautiful area. We loved our time there.
We stayed at Le Petit Versailles in Beynac and liked it very much. Might be hard to get in there on short notice, even this season. A short walk to "downtown" Beynac, views of the river and several castles, close to Sarlat but a rural setting.
Highly recommend Lys de Castelnaud, in Vézac, near Beynac. It's a B&B with some rooms that have view over the valley to castles, balloons (in season), off-street parking. Vivacious hostess Nathalie speaks English and is great at day trip recommendations, restaurant reservations, etc. Short drive to Sarlat (15 minutes) and other Dordogne towns. We have stayed there 3 times.
Thank you all for your suggestions. We just booked at Le Petit Versailles near Baynac. It's lovely and we would have never found it without this blog.
