We plan to bike the 'south vineyard loop' from Beaune in a few days and would like to find some decent medium to fuller bodied pinots from the area's smaller producers. Seems most of that area offers the chardonnay varietal. Anyone have suggestions for vineyards with good reds that are accessible by bike? We will also likely hit the Route des Grands Crus on another day but anticipate those to be much higher end and much pricier - correct?
"Decent" or "good" reds are very subjective. Having biked for five days through the Burgundy vineyards in 2014, and a Pinot lover, I can tell you that there are many places to taste and buy, and all levels of quality. Pinot is the Holy Grail, and Burgundy producers price it as such. Villages such as Gevry-Chambertin, Vougeot, and Vosne-Romanee have outstanding Pinots producers, and they are right on the bike trail. Even the smaller villages (Pommard, Santenay, etc) have outstanding and more affordable Pinot.
Take your time and explore. And taste many!
