At 70 years old and newlyweds, on October 30th, we’re going to Paris for the first time! We plan to stay in Paris for two weeks. I can find recommended itineraries for up to 1 week, but not 2 weeks. We’re grateful for good health and an active lifestyle. I would greatly appreciate any input, recommendations and suggestions. Merci!
With 2 weeks, add some day trips like Versailles, Chartres, Fontainbleau...we have also done a one day Champagne country tour - the one we did we were picked up at our Paris hotel, travel in a 7 passenger van, see vineyards, sample bubbly at 2 champagne houses, lunch included at a nice restaurant, tour of cathedral in Reims...highly recommend one of these tours, this is the one we took: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g187147-d647954-Reviews-Paris_Champagne_Tour-Paris_Ile_de_France.html
Consider a trip to Normandy (D-Day beaches and Bayeux (tapestry!) ) or the Loire Valley for Chateaux, we stayed in Blois.
What a lovely adventure to start your married life. Within the city, I think of all the museums - so many amazing ones - so consider picking just a few and saving the rest for next time. Others may disagree, but for strolling with your beloved, I suggest the Rodin or Orsay rather than the overwhelming Louvre. Don't overbook - consider planning a few day trips, book a museum or two in advance, then refer to your list of ideas each morning to fill in the other days. Have a wonderful time!
I know what you mean -- two week itineraries that I have seen seem to assume that if you have two weeks, you want to rush through as much of the country as possible. If you don't have Basilica Saint Denis on your week itinerary, that is something to consider adding. I agree with the day trips mentioned above and add to those Vaux le Vicomte, Provins, Rouen, and Auvers-sur-Soise. O rspend a day doing something out of the box -- we once spent the day visiting statues of George Washington because our son at the time was very interested in the American Revolution and another day was spent on the Marquise de LaFayette.
Fun! I’ve easily spent 2 weeks in Paris several times and there are several here who routinely go for a month-6 weeks.
What do you like? I AM a museum person as well as a church person so I can do them every day. If you are museum lovers I’d recommend 2 visits to the Louvre staying just a couple of hours at a time.
Any interest in walking tours? I enjoy Paris Walks (www.paris-walks.com) which has some interesting neighborhood or theme walks such as WWII or Hemingway or Knights Templar to name a few.
Tell us what you might like to see!
Two suggestions for museums , out of a list too long to count - The Orsay , and the trick here is to go on Thursday , the late night until nine forty five PM . We were there a few weeks ago , no crowds , walked right in . Arrived at about four in the afternoon . The Petit Palais , great collection , and generally overlooked .
If you are interested in the Eiffel Tower or Catacombs, book in advance. That's what was selling out in the summer.
Our 8.5 days were:
1) Sacre Couer (arrival half day)
2) Bike Tour and Arc de Triomphe
3) Orangerie, Notre Dame, Sainte Chapelle
4) Rodin Garden and Eiffel Tower
5) Army Museum, Napoleon's Tomb, Plans and Reliefs
6) Window shopping in Marais and Orsay
7) Louvre
8) Crypte (near Notre Dame) and the night fireworks show at Versailles
9) Luxembourg Gardens and Cluny Museum
What we didn't get to that was on our maybe list:
1) Inside Versailles (it was 100 degrees the day we had planned to go)
2) Catacombs (sold out)
3) Galleries Lafayette
4) Marmotten
5) A Paris Walks tour (the descriptions sounded great but we didn't walk enough before our trip to be ready)
6) Carnavalet
7) Any day trips - Chantilly
8) Artes et Metiers
9) Jazz music (or other concerts)
10) A food tour or cooking class
Have a great time!
Congratulations on your marriage! Paris is a wonderful, romantic city. There’s lots to see on the recommended itineraries for 1 week, do that stuff then take time to venture beyond. Do a day trip to Versailles, Giverny, or Chartres. If you’re Monet fans, visit the Orangerie and Marmottan Museums. Take a break in the garden at the Rodin. Enjoy a one hour cruise on the Seine at sunset (near the Eiffel Tower, no advance purchase needed). Wander around the neighborhoods and visit a few of the many charming cafes. There’s plenty to fill 2 weeks, or 2 months. I ❤️ Paris!
You can take a train to a smaller town/village for a few nights and explore. Colmar, Chartres or Rouen (Joan of Arc history) for examples.
Congrats & enjoy your time in France.
