Recommendation for D-Day Tour that accepts individual sign-ups

My husband and I will be in Bayeux next spring and plan on taking a full-day D-Day tour.

We looked into using both Paul Woodadge (D-Day Historian Tours) and Dale Booth, but they only give private tours for a flat rate of 600€ and 575€, respectively, whether you have 1 person or 8 people in your group.

Paul de Winter (De Winter War Tours) is listed in the RS France book. De Winter Tours will take individuals for 95€ each in a group of either 6 or 8 people. This is more economically feasible for us. We want a quality tour, but need to use our travel budget wisely.

Has anyone been on a tour with this company? I checked TripAdvisor and there were no reviews for De Winter War Tours.
OR
Can anyone recommend a full-day tour that accepts individual sign-ups?

Thanks!

Edit: I just sent two emails to De Winter War Tours - one to the email address listed in the RS France 2013 book and one to the De Winter War tours website booking…both were returned, so I'm assuming this company has closed. Still looking for a quality tour that allows individual sign-ups.

I did the full day tour with Overlord (they do one for the Canadian/British beaches also). They use vans and small buses -- there were about a dozen in our tour. I can't see that the size of the group within reason makes much difference. There was plenty of time at the sites and excellent commentary.

Hi Leia,

I know you mentioned Bayeux, but just to give you more options.... - the Caen Memorial WWII Museum has a Day Pass that includes both access to tour the nice museum plus a mini-van guided tour (64 E if you take the 9am mini-van to the sites or 81E if you take the afternoon mini-van.) We took the morning tour, ate a quick lunch at the museum cafeteria, & walked through the museum in the afternoon. We felt like we were able to see & & had sufficient time to walk around everything that we wanted. You sign up individually & the mini-van holds 7 people max.

Thanks for the recommendations, I really appreciate it. I will look into both tour companies.

@Jean - We plan to spend several hours at the Caen Museum the day after the tour. Hubby could probably spend a week doing D-Day activities so our compromise was a full day tour and as many hours as he wanted at the Caen Museum. In return I get 2 days of caves in the Dordogne :)

Leia,

Overlord Tours is probably your best bet. They offer a good variety of tours and AFAIK they're able to accommodate shared tours with a small group (probably about eight max.).

Regarding using D-Day Historian (Paul Woodage), I noticed THIS page on his website, advertising group tours for €100 per person. There appear to be seats open for at least some of these full day tours. It might be worthwhile to send him an E-mail.

Another vote for the Overlord tours (8 people max but we only had 5 on our tour in a small van). My adult son (a WWII buff) and I took the full-day Band of Brothers tour in October 2012 with wonderful guide Olivier. He's a local and knows the area's history and stories. We visited the beaches, American cemetery, small towns, etc. If you're staying in Bayeaux, be sure to see the Tapestry and eat at the excellent La Rapier resto (we went for lunch so it was less expensive).

My daughter and I used Overlord. We were the only half day customers..so ended up hav
ing the van and the driver (Sean) to ourselves.

If you are staying in Bayeaux...I recommend Hotel Reine Mathilde. Quaint, clean rooms and an excellent restaurant...the hotel is less than a 1/4 Mile to the tour pickup spot. Also, it is right across from the Cathedral and within short walking distance to the Bayeaux Tapestry.
