Recomendations for Provence

Hi, we're an older couple looking for suggestions for small picturesque towns for an extended stay that are reasonably close to larger cities that can be approached by public transportation, so no need for a car except for special trips. We'd like to be able to find an Airb&b for maybe $1200/mo or less so on the lower side of expense scale. Thanks.

You might take a look at Vence. It's 20 minutes by bus (which runs three times an hour) from there to the train along the coast. Then you could go either east or west to explore (another 20 minutes to Nice, for example).

We had good luck using Arle as a good home base. Easy train rides to Avignon, Aix En Provence, and Marseilles. Lots to do in these cities. Longer day trips include western cities on the French Riviera.

Additionally, there are some really great hilltop towns nearby but need a car for best convenience. Le Baux, Rousillon, and Gordes have amazing views. Driving is really easy in Provence.

Time of year? The mistral can be an issue in Provence.

I assume "an extended stay" doesn't mean more than 90 days, including arrival day and departure day. That's the Schengen Zone limit for Americans and Canadians who don't have long-stay visas.

Right, we will stay 1 or 2 months, maybe starting in mid may.
