Rain in Paris

So has it just been raining for 40 days and 40 nights in France? (And Germany??) Every time I check the weather forecast it shows rain, rain, rain. Wondering how accurate the forecast I'm looking at is and if it is real constant downpours or off/on, light showers or what. Trying to figure out what to pack. Sorry, I'm a Californian - not used to so much rain and not too happy about it!!

Yes, weather.com right now shows two days without rain in the next two weeks in Paris. So you should do what you should do even if the forecast was better -- pack a waterproof outer layer, with either a hood or a waterproof hat, and sturdy walking shoes. I never travel without my hooded Gore-tex shell parka, which (barely) covers my knees. It packs into its own pocket, weighs little, and breathes. I've usually found myself wearing it at least once, though not on every trip. I also wear thick-soled shoes that won't let water in easily but will dry overnight if they get wet (Rockports for me but there are many other brands). They're comfortable enough for daily use in any weather. These kinds of clothing are common-sense insurance even if the forecast is entirely dry.

You'll probably get long-lasting light rain on some days, intermittent heavy rain on others, and hopefully some dry days with either full sun or some clouds. Our Paris-based friends on this board will hopefully give you a fuller picture. But Paris gives you lots of things to do indoors, and places to duck in while a shower passes, and its streets and parks can be beautiful even in the rain. The trick is to keep yourself as dry as you can without abandoning the outdoors altogether. As the saying goes, there's no bad weather, only wrong clothing.

Good luck with the weather and everything else about your trip.

Just got back form Paris on Tuesday. We packed as the prior thread did......we keep Marmot waterproof raincoat shells with us in our backpacks at all times and it serves as a nice windbreaker too. We arrived in Paris May 25.....and the rain made it feel COLD. Glad I had taken a light sweatshirt and a bluejeans jacket. I felt like I had left Tennessee in spring and had gone back to winter. It rained on us as we left our hotel last Saturday so we sat in a cafe across from Notre Dame that morning, had coffee and waited till it stopped. The rest of the day was overcast but no rain.
Monday mid-morning the clouds parted, the sun came out and it was like a different town......and I think rain was forecasted.....just be ready! Sun shined Tuesday as we left!

We've been here since last Tuesday and the forecast was rain every day except one. The good news is that yesterday is the first day we saw any rain and it was quite brief. The streets are wet this morning but no rain at the moment.
What I'm saying is - the forecasts have definitely not been accurate for the last 5 days, but bring umbrella, etc. to be prepared for when (and if) it does rain.

The meteorologists change their predictions at least twice a day, and despite that, the weather never turns out the way they said it would. It's been an odd year, nothing makes sense. Don't worry, you will not melt - there are rarely "downpours" - it's just a little inconvenient.
Bring something light and waterproof, check the weather the day before you leave and pack accordingly.

I've seen lots of people in shorts and t-shirts, but the residents were wearing jackets and long pants. Depends on how well your body adjusts to temperature.

We've been in Paris for a week and a half now and the daily weather forecasts have been wildly inaccurate. We used umbrellas once when we first got here, but I haven't even put my coat on for a week. The weather has actually been great for sightseeing, although a couple days have been a little muggy. The younger crowd out touring has been wearing shorts and tank tops/t-shirts every day. Umbrellas are cheap and easy to find. Bring layers and you should be good.

We were in Paris from June 2nd to June 8th.

Rain forcast everyday.

LIARS .. it sucked as we cancelled a bike tour to country based on the lousy forecast for rain and thunder shows ( tour guide concurred that touring in that weather would be bad)

Sunny and HOT for most of our stay .. was glad to leave heat for Amsterdam on the 8th.. think weather got wetter then ..

Think it sprinkled lightly on our first day there.. that's it.

But forecasts were grim.

And of course today it's been pouring again a good portion of the afternoon.

Oh well, I was in the office, what did I care . . .

(just kidding, it is definitely getting OLD.)

Thanks all! Appreciate the feedback and advice - we will pack accordingly and come prepared, and hope for the best, but I won't sweat it :-).

Californian here, too--I was in Paris the 3rd week of May and had to deal with a bit of rain, but really, what got to me was the humidity. I am--ahem--a woman of a certain age and have always tended to run hot, but there I'd be in a short-sleeved T, sweating (did a LOT of walking) up a storm and there were the locals in a sweater, jacket and the ubiquitous scarf, cool as cucumbers. I had a lightweight jacket or sweater that worked well when it was cool in the morning or there was a determined downpour a couple of afternoons, easy to put in my bag, otherwise underneath it was a short or 3/4 sleeved top.
