I have just learned that the SNCF has a scheduled strike on the day we would be riding (6/23/2018). Our trip would have gone from Freiburg, Germany to Mulhouse (change to TGV), then Mulhouse to Paris. My searches have come up with these possible alternatives: taxi to Euroairport and fly to CDG, or rent a car one-way. Any other ideas? TIA
One way car rent will be horribly expensive, because you are dropping off in another country.
My suggestions:
1) Are you sure your train is not running? AFAIK some are running on strike days.
2) Train to Basel, then bus to Basel airport (a lot cheaper than a taxi). There is also a bus from Freiburg to Basel airport. Followed by:
2a) Flight to Paris
2b) Pick up a French hire car at the French side of Basel airport.
But, would imagine the few flights from Basel airport to Paris would be full that day, and hire cars would be in short supply.
BTW, it isn't SNCF that have decided on the strike. SNCF is the railway company (the employers). It is the union who are striking.
Or train to Strasbourg, then SNCF train to Paris (lots of trains on this route, some will probably be running on a strike date) OR rent a car for Strasbourg to Paris. As Chris noted, not every train is cancelled on any given strike date.
You can get a Flixbus out of Strasbourg for 30 EUR for 2. Leaves at 12:30 pm and gets to Paris Bercy at 6:10 pm.
You could take a train from Freiburg to Strasbourg, or use the connecting Flixbus from Freiburg in the morning.
