When I get off a cruise ship in Montecarlo, I want to travel by train to Rome. Do I need aRail Pass for both countries?

Bill,

I hope you've not purchased a rail pass because you can save money by buying point to point tickets in advance.

If your dates are firm, you can buy your train tickets up to 120 days in advance at a considerable discount.

You may want to check these informative websites:

Edit: To check train schedules check here: http://www.sncf.com/en/passengers

Are you planning to visit Florence or another city on your way to Rome?

Keep in mind that the train trip from Monte Carlo to Rome will take more than 8 hours & it will require 1-2 train changes.

If you're traveling from Monte Carlo to Rome, you may consider flying( from Nice).

No, Montecarlo/Monaco is very close to the border, so even if you wanted a multi-day rail pass for Italy, it would not pay to add France on the pass. All that you probably really need is a regular train ticket between those cities. Most portions of the route will be reserved at the time that you buy the ticket. Full fare in 2nd class is under $100.

The two most direct train departures (just one connection) leave at either 8:20 or 14:20. You can book tickets up to three months ahead with a discount, if you're sure of your schedule, but request each leg separately, such as Monaco-Genoa in the morning, then Genoa-Rome. The afternoon connection is currently quicker through Milan, instead of Genova. How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it.
