Quimper vs Brest

Hi. I’m planning a trip for early July 2025. It will include six nights in the western coast of Brittany, either within 35 minutes of quimper or Brest. For reasons not worth mentioning, we won’t be splitting the time up - it is six nights in one of those 2. While I’ve spent time in Britany I’ve not been this far west. Question is, which area do you recommend.

I suspect our time will be spent at the beach, hiking on trails, seeing lighthouses, visiting villages, islands, and making one day trip to the city in question.

Thank you.

Several years ago we spent a week on the beach at Kerval. Google says it is 30min (22 km) from Quimper.
We did the beach, some walking and visited villages.

Besides the beach, you might look at Locronan a picturesque little village, and slightly closer to Quimper.

Douarnenez is the bigger town in the area, and it has the Ile de Tristan.

Brest can be bleak, it was bombed out in WWII. Quimper is far more charming. However, the coastline is great around either, and less busy towards Brest. Crozon peninsula is especially lovely (and accessible from both Quimper & Brest).
So, what are the specific locations you have in mind? You say "35 min" from either.

I found a house that perfectly suits our needs in Le Conquet. That’s the “near Brest option”. There are less ideal options along the coast south and southwest of Quimper. I’m trying to weigh the differences in accommodation vs the things we would see in each location. For what it is worth, Quimper is a 75 minute drive from the house in le conquet - so doable as a day trip if Brest holds little touristic value.

Late reply, sorry.
Le Conquet is as remote as it gets, but the coastline of northern Finistère is beautiful, and you could do day trips to Molène or Ouessant islands in fair weather.
It is not a typical choice for a base location, and you will face longish drives if you want to leave the area, but it is certainly not a bad choice. The southern coast is significantly more expensive.

Thank you Balso. That is helpful. I think we are going to give it a try. A few days of longish day trips should be fine. I’d like to get a feel for what the west is like. Or trip is shaping up to be 6 nights in Dinan (which we’ve been to a few times) then 6 nights here and then 2 nights in either Rennes or Nantes (haven’t been to either). We have been to Carnac area and the Rose Granite coast.

Thanks again!

Matt,
In 2017 we stayed in a small room at a B and B in Le Conquet, La Maison de Neuilly. It was very basic The B and B was simple and funky, with lots of the heavy and old and interestingly-carved furniture I find typical of the area.....an interesting and pleasant experience, with a good bteakfast. We walked a short way to look at the ocean, then back to the small square, and to see the small church there. While at Le Conquet, we drove to Lampaul-Plouarzel and to Pluguffan to visit various family members, and to Quimper for a stroll around town and a meal. Personally, I like the "land's end" feel of that part of Bretagne. The majesty of the Atlantic as seen from Finisterre is thrilling and humbling at the same time. I can imagine being in the 18th century, standing next to the ocean, especially on a somewhat grey and windy day (not uncommon!)
And I think Quimper is underappreciated by American tourists. We were there in early May, but the summer offers some fetes and festivals which you might see. The main one is the Festival du Cornouaille, in the latter part of July. I hope you are there during that time. (We miss so many things like that, traveling in the spring and fall.)
Our next stop was Pluneret, where we stayed in a chambre d'hote before seeing the dolmen at Carnac the next day and heading off to Saumur. Quimper definitely over Brest! It has a lovely cathedral too.
I'm happy to hear you are spending more than just a couple of days in Bretagne. It is a magnificent and mystical place!
Amusez-vous bien!
