Hi - we were considering staying in St Jean de Luz with our two children in late June to enjoy the beach (the Grand Plage) and were curious if it the water would be warm enough to swim and would be very crowded. I read that parking by the beach is very challenging, so we were looking at rentals where we could walk (hopefully not too noisy by the streets). My husband is worried the street noise will be unpleasant but I recall Rich describing this as a "sleepy fisherman's village" so I'm hoping it's not. Anyone been recently and can offer advice either about staying on/near Grand Plage or using it in the summer? Thanks so much!
It's not exactly a sleepy little fishing village, but not a major town either. Have a look on Google Earth.
Look at accommodations with parking on Booking.com.
There is a big parking lot about 500m from the beach.
The water will not be warm enough for me to swim, but children are hardier!
I have stayed there several times with my family, but usually the first week in September.
When we've had sun the water is fine, and at this time of the year. We have also been there with cool, grey, windy, rainy weather.
We have stayed both in the center an just out of the center. If you stay in the old town you will have to park in the free parking behind the train station. You can leave the car there for several days if you need to. When we were outside the center, there is street parking, and again you can leave your car there.
I prefered staying in the Haizé Errota part of town. It is a short walk to the beach, and just a bit farther to the center.
I can't recall being there in June, but I know that in July, especially when the weather is nice, it is very crowded with visitors.
