We are going to Paris and part of northeast France in October. Do I need to purchase the tickets in advance for the Louvre and any chateaux at Loire valley?

I was in Loire late last September and didn't notice any particularly long lines to buy tickets.
At the Louvre, there are seperate lines for those with passes or prepaid tickets. If you buy tickets in advance, it will save time even in October.

If you buy the Museum Pass you will have access to many other museums and sites too.
