Public transport Latin Quarter Paris to CDG?

Hi All,

I did search the forum, but I see most people are looking for advice FROM CDG. We are renting a car at CDG and heading direct to Normandy. However, two weeks later, we will have one last night in Paris in the Latin quarter (Hotel des Grandes Ecoles: 75 Rue du Cardinal Lemoine, 75005) and would prefer to skip the taxis and use public transport back to the airport if possible. I hear there are some direct buses? Or RER? Are there nearby metro stops that don't involve lots of stairs for luggage? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Merci!

Chris

We returned from Paris last week and used the RER station at Les Halles. Tickets to CDG were 11 euro each, trip took about 35 minutes. Be sure to keep your ticket, you have to insert it at your destination to get through the turnstile. I can't remember about stairs, sorry.

The RER B will take you to CDG. We stayed nearer Luxembourg Gardens than you are and used Luxembourg station on Boulevard Saint-Michel to access the RER B which went directly to the airport. According to Google Maps this is a 12 minute/950meter walk from your hotel. You could walk or take a taxi to that station or use a subway station that is closer to your hotel and a combination of stops to get to a station that is also an RER B stop and then proceed to CDG.

Thanks! I forgot that I could look up public transport on Googlemaps. Silly me. Luxembourg it is! I might be in the "overplanning" phase of my June trip.

Beware of traveling through the Les Halle station - it's the busiest metro station in the world and not a good place to be dragging luggage trying to get to the airport on schedule.

And I know this how? From personal experience unfortunately.

I just plan on RER B from Gare Nord to CDG. It's a ten euro ticket (looks like a regular metro ticket). I've been through the area several times when it was crowded enough that there was a line for the ticket machines. I'd give yourself a little extra time for that, once on the train it's a fairly reliable 45 minutes until you can get off at CDG. The RER has two stops, one for Terminal one and three and another for Terminal two. Know which terminal you want to get to before you start so you can get off at the correct stop.

I took this train yesterday for my flight home from Paris. A couple things I noticed. There are two RER destinations going north, the route forks. No problem as long as you take the one that says the destination is CDG. While I was waiting the boarding area at Gare Nord was really full and the first train was just too packed so I waited for the next. The next wasn't going to CDG but was then "en retarde" (late) after waiting a number of minutes, the train following that was supposed to go to CDG changed to the other. I decided to get out of the station and move a few stops north (still on both lines) just to get away from the crowds, then waited there for the train to CDG.

The RER has a list of airlines and their terminals near the door on the train. I don't know if they are all wrong but the one I wanted was wrong. I thought I was going to Terminal one but the list said Terminal three. I walked over to Terminal three, asked information, then walked back to Terminal one. Don't rely on the information on the train. I was on WOW airline, the others might be more predictable and the information more reliable.

Download the RATP application to your smart phone. It is incredible for planning and completing trips on public transport, particularly by train.

The Luxembourg RER station has working escalators; I'm not sure about the ones at the St. Michel RER station.
I agree that your best option is to walk or get a cab to the Lux. Station and get RER from there to CDG.

What Brad did, taking the RER a few stops north of Gare du Nord toward CDG, relegated him to a slow non-express train (an omnibus). If you want one that makes very few or no stops(a direct) between Paris and CDG, you have to pick it up in Paris at any stop between Cité Universitaire and Gare du Nord. Just wait for one to post. In your case, it's either Luxembourg or you may be a few meters closer to St. Michel as you've already figured out.

You need to look up your Terminal before heading for the airport. It should be in your information when you check in on line.

Click the Getting Around tab.
To save a little time, buy your ticket a day in advance.
My choice would be a short walk to Metro 10, getting off near the St-Michel RER station to catch RER B and avoid the sprawl at Gare du Nord.
Google Maps are getting better at this sort of planning too.

Actually the metro to the RER at St. Michel is a bit confusing and a bit of a schlep. Although my husband grew up on the RER B line, the two of us found the St. Michel station confusing with both the RER B and C and all their variations. We got on a wrong train one day. Although a longer walk above ground, I'd stick with Luxembourg because it has only the RER B, two tracks, escalators and minimal schleping and confusion. This was the original terminal station for the old Ligne de Seaux before they blasted through and created the RER systems.
