We rented an apartment in Paris for our trip via a big blue website starting with B , you may have heard of it ;). I would like to share our experience, hopefully helping others in the process.
For our apartment we had to meet a check in agent. Okay makes sense. We booked a check in time via email...3pm. Ok so we arrive at cdg 10ish and make our way to the city via RER ( simple, fast and excellent by the way, cannot speak highly enough of public transport in Paris). We reach our "meeting place" at around 1pm. Yes we're early , so we contact the agency just to let them know. We recieve a very blunt email reply saying our time is 3pm no earlier. Ok fine, we were just touching base anyway :/.
So long story short ...we recieve a message at 2:30pm that our checkin agent has been delayed and cant arrive before 5pm..GREAT. Glad we packed light... At this point our group decides to split up and leave one waiting at the cafe near the meeting place. I draw the short straw ( literally). So they give me the photocopies of passports and everything we THOUGHT we would need.
So come 5pm, after a very long lonely apero for me, surprise surprise no email, no one here. I promptly send an email to the agency at this point im annoyed and dissapointed, and let them know. No response. Then lo behold at 520pm I get a call from an unknown french number, the man is finally here. I meet the young man, a scruffy student in his early 20s by the looks, this must be his part time job. He greets me and leads me to the apartment. I dont scold or lecture monsieur, as I had my share of crummy student jobs...
He leads me across the street to a fine Haussmanian building, up the surprisingly spacious elevator(!) and lets me in. Takes me a couple of minutes to realise , this aint the same as the pictures. Not as in it doesn't live up to the photoshopped glitzy ad pics, but its clearly a different apartment! I inform the man and show him the pictures. Here I must say the apartment was still nice. Professionally cleaned, 3 large bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, large kitchen, nice windows overlooking a charming boulevard. However, I dont want to have some mixup and be kicked out 2 days later for the real guests! The man assures me this wont happen, and there must have been some mistake at the office... Hmmm I take his word for it.
So next i must do some paperwork, the man needs ids and the card used for the booking, my friends card, and a contract signed. I present him everything. He quickly informs me this isnt the same card, and he needs to see the same card or we have no contract. Damn it all! I call my friend...don't get through twice..his phone must be out of battery. Knowing my friend as I do, he is probably a bottle of wine deep by now, speaking nonsense to a poor waiter on some terrace in Montmarte!! I call my other friends wife. They are not with him, but, thank god, know where he is. The agent informs me a clear phone picture of the front of the card is ok. However he also informs me we must try to be fast as he has another apartment in 30minutes. Fantastic.
Luckily we make it just in time , I present him the picture it matches up, he gives me the keys, but only one set! I ask for at least one more set. He says he will inform "management". If its the same management that screws up the apartment and check in time..my hopes aren't high.
So with the keys and everything organised I head out to meet my friends to enjoy what's left of my first day in Paris.
All in all not a "nightmare" scenario, but far less than perfect. Admittidly we are maybe not most the most organised group of travellers...the credit card problem was our fault. However the company we landed on was quite disorganized and rude, we recieved no apology from anyone for the lateness or apartment mixup. Got our full deposit back on time, phew!
Besides all this had a lovely 10 days in charming Paris!
Happy travels!
