Provins & Vaux le Vicomte in the same day?

I'm considering day trips (Wednesday) from Paris and I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to take the train to Vaux le Vicomte and spend a few hours there and then go on to Provins in the mid-afternoon. Does anyone know how late the trains go back from Provins to Paris?

Just in case no one has done that exact trip and looking at the map and train service, you should go for what you are considering since the distance is not to far between going to the two sites.
You can easily look up the train schedule and even buy e-tickets from Provins to Paris and all routes on the SNCF (French National Rail) website:

I should have added that we will have the 5 zone Travel Visite Pass. The chateau is a stop on the way to Provins, which makes me wonder if doing both is possible.

I have visited both places on one day in 2009, but staying in Provins and having my own car I had not to bother about travelling time. The historical part in Provins is not so big so two hours there will be enough. Spended three hours in Vaux-le-Vicomte “plein tarif (full price)” including the main building with splendid view from the roof terras, garden en little carriage museum. Have to say this is without heaving a break, well besides sitting down for a while on a bench to enjoy the garden. I could have stayed very well longer there, but have to drive all the way back home to the Netherlands the same day.

Think arranging this trip from Paris must be doable.

If you can arrange your transportation to see Provins during the day and then head over to Vaux le Vicomte for the late afternoon and evening it's worth it! The chateau does AMAZING candlelight evenings during the summer where the house and gardens are lit with thousands of candles and then fireworks at the end of the night. Not sure how transport would work without a car since I've never tried it with just public transport.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback. My plan is to take the train/shuttle to Vaux le Vicomte early as possible that morning, and mid-afternoon try to either shuttle/train to Provins, or more likely just to take a taxi from the chateau to Provins, and then train back from Provins to Paris that night.

We’ve been to both but not on the same day. I wouldn’t do both but that’s because I like to spend a lot of time at Vaux, really take my time and enjoy it.

When we went to Provins, we had to take a bus from the train station to Provins. Trying to get one back was hellatious. After waiting for 45 min and trying to figure out where to wait (it’s a large area where many busses to many places come and go) we went to the Tourist Info right by this large bus area and asked them when does the bus come and exactly where should we be standing. They had no clue (and we speak French). So we just sat out there waiting and hoping. It took us about 2 hrs more of waiting for a bus which finally came.

My point is, things don’t always go smoothly. You may as well try it, but go first to the one that interests you the most.
