Provins or Rouen?

My husband and I will be spending some time in Paris this summer, and have two days set aside for day trips. One day will go to Versailles, and the other is still up for debate, although we're pretty sure it's between Provins and Rouen. We both love history, particularly medieval, which is what draws us to these towns. We'd like to spend the day exploring the town, churches, museums, just getting a nice feel for the area. I was wondering if anyone who has been to these towns could share their experiences/opinions/advice? Thank you so much in advance!

Hard one, I have been to both, and enjoyed both! Frankly I can't help because I think they both have good points...I might be slightly tilted towards Rouen....but only slightly!

I haven't been to Rouen, but have been to Provins a couple of years ago, and highly recommend this fascinating, medieval town. A UNESCO world heritage site.

Traveling by car or train? Might be a factor; if train with Rouen being much larger, public transportation, I assume, would be the better choice?

Have not been to Provins; have been to Rouen. A huge thumbs up. Lots to see and do. Been to Europe many times, have NEVER seen anything as spectacular as the light show on the facade of the Cathedral. Do not know how often it is presented but it would be worth checking out. Also the Church of St. Joan is quite nice; as she was martyred in Rouen.

We were traveling by car and spent 1.5 days roaming the city. Stayed at the Hotel des Carmes - lovely and inexpensive.

If you don't have a hotel as yet, check out the Esmeralda in Paris. Right near (very) Notre Dame and the Metro. Nice neighborhood; think we spent 130 Euros a night; inexpensive by Paris standards.

Good luck.
