Provence Mosquitos in August

Will be visiting Provence next August and am reading horror stories about their mosquitos. Would love to hear some experiences. Thanks.

gdknix,
Unless things have changed a lot, I don't recall there being a huge number of mosquitoes in August, but Provence is a huge region, over 12,000 square miles. In the Camargue there can be lots of mosquitoes. It is a wetland, marshy area in the Rhone Delta. That area is very different than the coastal town of Bandol, or the inland town of St. Remy de Provence, or the Alpes Maritime.....,,,
I would compare Provence to California as far as the variance in types of climate you can find. I am curious as to where you are finding these horror stories. Perhaps I am missing something in recent news from France. I haven't been there for two years, so I could be wrong about the mosquito problem. I hope not.

We stayed in Tarascon (the one in Provence obviously) in July 2015 for one week. The mosquitos were bad. Our rental house had a pool and outdoor space that was unusable due to the bugs.

While walking around Arles, etc, the bugs weren’t as bad.

Our rental house also did not have screens and only 2 rooms had ac. We had a fun week nonetheless but it was less pleasant than stays elsewhere in France.

We visited Marseille and Arles in August a few years back, and I don't even remember seeing any mosquitos. This was, however, one of only two trips where we did very unfortunately get bedbugs. Thank goodness we did not bring them home. I remember at the time thinking how odd it was we had so many mosquito bites without seeing any mosquitos, until I realised what the actual cause was.

Had similar concerns about mosquitos in Florence (from what I had read), so I bought a pop up mosquito net, travel size. Didn’t need it in the end, but bugs were bad in Vienna, so I taped mosquito netting (also packed) over the open window. Tape didn’t rip any paint off and the net was efficient in keeping mosquitos etc out of the room

I do have some quite "buggy" experiences of Arles on summer evenings. Makes sense, given the local geography.
Same on parts of the coast e.g. the lower parts of Hyères or Sanary.
But in other places, it's no big problem, I had fewer mosquitos living in Marseille than in my previous Paris apartment, for example.

I spent 2 weeks in the Var region in August this summer, and I was a veritable buffet for the mosquitos.

My first time in Arles back in summer '88 included a ridiculous amount of 'moustiques'. Probably more than any other place we've visited. But during the many other visits to other corners of Provence (plus a return to Arles), we have not really been plagued.
I would not worry. Just bring the repellant of your choice.
I am done. the mozzies
