Provence Hill Towns of the Luberon tour recommendations please- this week

We are in Aix en Provence now, without a car, and are trying to choose a good full or half day tour to see villages including Lourmarin, Roussillon, Gordes…and any other beautiful spots along the way. There are several tours available from the TI, but they don’t provide many clear details, and some seem contingent on the day of week whether they will even stop -perhaps they won’t if it isn’t a market day, for example.

I would love to have a few recommendations from people who have taken specific tours recently, please.

We are also trying to get to Les Baux for the Carrieres des Lumieres show, found a tour, but learned it will only drop us in Les Baux for us to explore on our own, and have an even briefer stop in Saint Remy. For what they are charging, I’d like to have a guide teaching us about the area!

So…anyone have any guides or tours they loved?

Many thanks,
Laurie

In summer 2022 we had a great day in St Remy with Philippe Goninet.

We had specifically wanted a guide for Glanum and then the small museum in St Remy that has some of the artifacts there.

But he is a very experienced guide around the area.

I believe he was president of a guide association. So maybe he can help you or suggest someone else who can.

I hope you found a way to tour because weather is good today.
We were in Saint Remy two weeks ago for a couple of hours for lunch before going to Les Carrières and found it charming. Why Saint Remy? Almost everywhere else was closed on a Monday. In fact, in those smaller places many shops and restaurants haven’t opened yet for the season. They will in about a week.

Second, the current show at the Carrière was disappointing, the Monet. Everyone I know who has seen it has said the same. The images were either low definition or they fuzzed them thinking it would be “impressionistic”.

Merci, Laurie Ann and Elizabeth! I appreciate your swift replies

It’s disappointing to hear that the Monet show was not as expected. I canceled my reservation with the expensive tour when I found a more reasonable private tour with À la Française. I think I’m still willing to give it a try, especially if the overall price is more reasonable.

It is a beautiful day today, and tomorrow looks good too. I’m excited about touring around Provence. I just need to find the best tour for tomorrow.

Thanks!

Can you report back to us Laurie. How were your tours? Can you give details. Do you want to share your guides’ information to help others?

Yes, I’m happy to share now that we have just gotten back from a full day tour! I ended up booking a Markets and Luberon Hill Towns tour with À la Française. Our tour guide was Melissa and she was delightful. Today was market day in Lourmarin, so we began there and had a lot of time to explore the extensive market and the village. Next, we went to Roussillon, with enough time to enjoy a beautiful lunch and look at the ochre all around us. Next was Gordes, also beautiful in different ways. We stopped at a viewpoint outside the city to get some spectacular pictures Finally, we went to Fontaine la Vaucluse. There we were able to walk along the river. It was beautiful, with lots of flowering trees and irises in bloom and the rushing water sounded beautiful and looked lovely and clear. The trees are just beginning to get leaves on them in this region, and this last stop was more shady and peaceful.

As we made our way back to Aix, we had a really nice view of Mont St. Victoire, which was an unexpected bonus for me!

After lots of effort that never came to fruition, I gave up on my Les Baux and Carrières des Lumières wish. I appreciated hearing your review, Elizabeth, although I’m really sorry it wasn’t as good as you hoped it would be. Maybe next time!

I’m hoping tomorrow we can get an early start to the market here because we’ve noticed there are a lot more people who arrived today, most likely for Easter holidays. I’m looking forward to getting more fresh strawberries!

The Tourism office does tours with several different operators, and one of them was the one we used today. I just decided to book directly with À la Française because they were gracious about answering my questions on the phone yesterday, and I’d read some really favorable reviews about their guides.

Hope this helps others as they planning their spring and summer in Provence!😊
