Provence from Paris

Arriving July 24 at CDG. Thinking of taking a train to Provence. Arles or Avignon? Are there wineries where I can taste Rose, without a car? Thanks.

I believe Rick has a few comments about the Arles-vs-Avignon choice in his guide to France. They are both worthwhile destinations. TGVs to Avignon run relatively frequently from Paris-Gare de Lyon, a good number of them take less than three hours, and most of the time you needn't change trains. The trip to Arles will be about one hour longer and will always require at least one change of train. I wouldn't consider that difference in travel time a deal-breaker, but after an overnight flight and possibly suffering from significant jetlag, I think only having to get yourself onto and off of one train would be nice.

The other places you want to visit in Provence could also affect your choice of base. Some places are just easier to reach by public transportation from Avignon. There may also be places easier to get to from Arles. I can tell you that the popular St-Remy is on the bus line connecting Arles and Avignon, so it's easy to visit from either one.

Thank you! Yes, I purchased the newest France book and Rick says that Arles is more budget friendly, but I am leaning toward Avignon.
I am hoping to find a winery where I can taste/buy Rose.

Wineries are agricultural enterprises, and they do not typically have access by public transportation. If you are thinking about purchasing a number of cases and want them delivered to your home, and you speak French, you may find visiting a winery worthwhile. Otherwise, I would simply purchase a few bottles at a local Carrfour, Auchan, or Leclerc.

If you really want to visit a winery, contact the Office de Tourisme in Avignon, as they generally have a few organized wine tours costing from 50€ to 200€.
