We will be visiting Provence about June 12th for 7 days. We are thinking to have a base in St. Remy. Can someone recommend a nice hotel.? Is St Remy a good place for a base to explore the area?

Loved St. Remy -- last May we stayed in a Saturday-to-Saturday vacation rental through HomeAway that was walking distance to the town center for restaurants and groceries and the weekly market. Free gated parking. Pool. Nimes, Orange, Les Baux, Pont du Gard, Arles are all easy drives.

St Remy is a good choice, isle sur la sorgue is another good option.
this topic has been covered many times. do a search on the tab at the top of the page, for previous posts and ideas of things to see/do

hope this helps

Glenn and Laura thank you for your input! I'll probably stay in St Remy. Have either of you ever staid in Les Baux?

Bonita, the place we stayed was on 3 Avenue de Souvenir Francais -- listed as a "mazlet" small studio, washer, kitchenette. We paid €330 cash for the week.

to answer your question, we stayed in St Remy, we had had a car and found a B&B where we could walk a couple of hundred metres to the restaurants and shopping market, its not a huge town so driving in and out each day was very easy. there was enough restaurants to choose from and the town is easy to walk around.
personally I would look for a B&B as the you 'may' experience the same thing we did where the owner can give you great advice for things to see and do and potentially have a nicer experience. much better than a hotel IMO. Also most times when we have stayed at B&Bs we have met wonderful guests who you can talk to about their travels.
hope this helps.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend staying in Les Baux - it's pretty small, and I imagine quite sleepy after everything closes** - and not sure how the parking situation would work - it's a great place to visit tho! (**Unless sleepy is what you want!)

We stayed at La Maison de Line in St Remy. It has a B&B plus small self catering cottages. The property was beautiful with wonderful gardens, a stunning pool area and lovely decor. There was also secure parking on site.

Each morning we walked two minutes up the street to buy fresh baguettes to bring back to our cottage. It was a five minute walk into town where there were ample restaurants and shops. We even found a shop run by a chef where we could buy restaurant quality meals that we could reheat at night if we didn’t feel like eating out. There was also a whole foods supermarket, plus a large general supermarket and of course the weekly street market.

Everywhere we wanted to see was within an hour of St Remy. The roads were excellent and the countryside just beautiful. We were surprised by the variety of landscapes and sights. We stayed 6 nights and had more than enough to do. After spending each day wandering, we would return to our wonderful accommodation and relax by the pool.

Prior to booking, we had trouble deciding between St Remy and L’isle de sorgue. We were very happy with our choice after visiting L’isle de sorgue. Admittedly it was a Sunday when the markets were on, but the parking was crazy, the streets very crowded and the layout of the town less compact. We felt it had less charm than St Remy.

Les Baux is too small for my liking as a base, but worth a visit. You must go to Carrieres de Lumieres. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.

I booked thru booking. Com
We stayed in a cottage, the one that has a washing machine and king bed
Did not do bkft as we had a kitchen

I will add this
We didn’t think the pool would be important to us but we were there during a heat wave, we used it every day, it was so gorgeous and refreshing.

We stayed in a cottage with a queen bed and washing machine. We had a private outdoor area covered with red and gold grape vines, with a table and two chairs, plus two deck chairs.

We had breakfast in the B and B section on our first morning as we hadn’t time to buy in supplies at that stage. It was a typical continental breakfast with croissants, pastries, yoghurt pots and fresh juice. All home made. The other days we made use of our own kitchen facilities.

Like the previous poster the pool wasn’t a “must have” when we booked - but it is a very stylish, comfortable area to sit and unwind at the end of the day or cool off.

There is also security parking in a gated compound.

I chose Arles as my base largely because I didn't find a good Airbnb choice in San Remy for my trip. I visited St. Remy and was glad I stayed at Arles.
