Provence back to Paris Driving

I want to stop and stay a night or two in an interesting city driving back from Avignon. I was thinking Lyon, although Ive been there twice already. Any other interesting places youd recommend?

One place we like to stop when driving back from the south is Semur en Auxois. Lovely small medieval town. We have also stayed in Auxerre; did that last fall returning from the Ardeche and stayed at a hotel right below the Cathedral with good secure parking. Really enjoyed strolling around the town and lots of dining options. We prefer to avoid large cities for this type of overnight stop. No pictures of Auxerre but here are some of Semur:

Lyon is ok but it is the second largest city in France and has all the warmth and character that goes with its size. I go along with Janet's thoughts and would just add a couple of stops along the way. Beaune is on your way to the Auxois area and a stop there to see the Hotel Dieu is time well spent. Also take time to stop by the Chateauneuf-en-Auxois, it is a great hill top town on the way to Auxere. From Auxere it is a relatively short drive to Guedelon where an eccentric Parisian is having a 13th century chateau built using the same tools and methods that were used in the 13th century. It is really quite interesting and you do not have to worry that it will be finished before you get there.

Since you will be driving, take a break at the rest stop near Montelimar. Montelimar has a reputation for among the best nougat candies in France. The reputation is well deserved!
