Provence area in October

Hi, all,
I have three weeks starting in Nice this October. After a few days there we plan to visit the Gorges du Verdon and that area and then go to the Arles/Avignon/Saint Remy area. We can stay there 6 nights or after three we can move on to Carcassone and Toulouse. From Toulouse we are going to Lascaux.
We will have a car. I am more interested in small towns but wonder if 6 days of them is too many, and whether or not I will regret skipping Toulouse. There is a scathing review of Carcassone on this website so now I am second guessing this stop.

If we stay all 6 nights in the Arles/Avignon/Saint Remy area, where do you recommend?
And finally, is the Carrières de Lumière worth seeing? It looks a bit difficult to get to.

We live near Washington DC so that is why I am more interested in small towns. But then, I almost skipped London for the same reason!

Thanks.

I would definitely opt for 6 nights in Provence: possibilities are endless.
Carcassonne, Toulouse, Lascaux over 3 nights: that's too much driving really. Perhaps you will have the opportunity to visit Toulouse and Carcassonne as an extension to a future trip to the Périgord?

Also, how long did you allow for Gorges du Verdon and vicinity? Ideally you need two nights: the roads are slow.

As for a base town: Saint Rémy is really perfect with a car. It will put you very close to Carrières de Lumières (worth it) and Les Baux, and 30-60 min from Arles, Avignon, Pont du Gard, Nîmes, Orange, most of the Luberon... Aix, Uzès and Vaison are just a bit further but also doable (less than 90 min).

Agree with comments made. 6 nights is NOT too long. We have been to Provence a number of times. Consider Crillon le Brave! Also, enjoyed Carrieres de Lumiere. Doing some of the Van Gogh locations is also very interesting.

We are also planning a trip to Provence in the fall and would strongly encourage you to start booking your lodging. I've been very surprised with how many B&Bs and hotels are already booked!
