Protests in Paris

I see from the news reports that the yellow-vest protests continue in Paris. To those who live in or have recently visited Paris, any suggestions to someone who will soon be visiting Paris on what not to do, how obstrusive or prominent the protests are, and what areas to avoid on what days. Thanks in advance for any information that can be provided.

Our grandson is attending university in Paris. He said the protests have had little impact on his day to day. The protests are held mainly during the weekends. I suggest you plan your trip to avoid the big tourist landmarks then. There’s plenty of other things to do. A visit to Pere LaChaise cemetery would be a great 1/2 day adventure.

We’ll be traveling to Paris on the Eurostar mid May. An industrial action is now affecting Gare du Nord. I hope there won’t be any when we are there.

I found this article under: Watch, Read, Listen>Travel News. I heard the protests occur on Saturdays. Last weekend, the protesters vandalized and burned buildings on the Champs-Élysées.

I would think that you might make plans for areas out of the center of Paris on Saturdays when you are there.

I have a friend who is going to be there for 5 days at the end of April and she plans to go to Mont Martre and Sacre Coeur on that Saturday.

I'm not sure if it is published in the papers and/or announced in the news media which area will be involved so people can practice avoidance techniques. Last April I was in Paris for a few days and the train strikes were ongoing and our scheduled train trip to Amsterdam was a strike day. We were taking the TGV on Thalys so we were unaffected.

Good luck!

  1. Register with the US Govt State Department before each trip no matter where to travel. www.step.us/govt (or address something like that). You’ll be alerted to any actions/dangers natural or manmade no matter where you are for the length of your trip. Three years ago it alerted us to the Seine River floods, train strike, airplane strike (by email/text). This year it alerted us to the Yellow Jackets last Saturday. The protests are all over France. Not just in Paris. The Arc du Triumph Area is most effected. We are in France now. Broken store front glass windows in Paris but also seen in Avignon (so far).
  2. Realize that America is currently the most hostile developed country. Gun violence is rampant. I feel safer walking Europe than San Francisco. Enjoy your adventure. Be street smart and you’ll be fine.

Hi: I am an American who lives in Paris (in the 3rd. arr., sort of near Place de la République). The gilets jaunes protests take place on Saturdays, pretty exclusively.

I still go out on Saturdays and have not been impacted by the protests. I simply avoid the Champs-Elysées and that area.

Even at République, which is where almost all protests seem to take place, it has not been bad at all. One Saturday things got a little out of hand, but then it started raining and people left the area.

The only other thing I've noticed is that some bus lines aren't running on Saturdays and some Métro stops are closed.

In the beginning of the protests, lots of stores simply closed on Saturdays. But now, almost everything -- with the exception of that usual protest zone near Arc de Triomphe -- appears to be pretty normal.

Leider nicht. As "The Who" sang in the title song, "not "My Generation." (1964).
