Proof of medical insurance requirement?

Bonjour tous,
I was checking on my travel documents at Air France and was surprised to see a requirement to "...hold an insurance certificate covering all medical, hospital and death-related expenses during their stay in France, including the cost of repatriation for medical reasons. The certificate must be translated into English."

Are the border police really asking for this documentation? Do they accept a PDF on my phone?

Wr aren’t flying Air France but are flying to CDG too. I hadn’t heard of this! But we did take out insurance with full medical insurance while there.

I think this has been a rule for a long time BUT I've never heard on the forum of Border Police asking for it.

I suspect it's one of those things that if you look scrungy or otherwise raised red flags and they don't really want to admit you they could ask for it to have a reason to keep you out.

MY opinion only.....

in my experience if they want to see anything, it's a return plane ticket so they know you're not planning to stay

Thanks! It's a good thing I've never noticed that requirement before. As it happens, I'll be buying medical evacuation insurance and my healthcare plan covers me in France. I don't want to bring paper documentation though. I'll make sure to shave before boarding my flight to Paris and to greet the border control agent with a sincere "Bonjour" :-)

We go to Paris a couple of times a year and have for years and have never been asked to show anything beyond the passport except of course for COVID vaccinations during the last couple of years and that is no longer being requested. They CAN require it and if you are seeking a longer term visa you will need to provide it. WE now that we are old buy travel insurance, so we have that, but no one has ever asked.

That is a common requirement for just about every country for entry. You can also be required to show proof of funds to support yourself while traveling, proof of onward travel, and be able to answer about your itinerary/plans, criminal history, etc.

However, it is rare, especially for tourists from the US or Canada, that they ask anything more than "Business or Pleasure?" and "How long are you staying?"

Probably wise to think about an answer, prudent to carry your insurance card or evidence of travel insurance, but likely you will not be asked.

Proof of medical insurance (to include hospital stays), providing coverage in France, is but one of several items that you can be asked to produce when passing through the border. Some others:

  • Proof of accommodation for the entire stay

  • Sufficient funds or the equivalent of 65€ per day in addition to accommodation expense

  • A return ticket

Some people look at this in much the same way as they approach the need for an International Driver's Permit when renting a car. The chances of your being asked to provide this information are few.
