Has anyone had trouble using a Capital One CREDIT card in France recently (last 6 months or so)? I'm not talking about the new debit cards which use the Discover network, with which there have been lots of problems since the Discover transition. With our Capital One CREDIT card we have been unable to make ticket purchases for the Orsay. I tried using our VISA and it worked fine. I'll be in France next week and don't want to find that my primary travel credit card isn't working! Thanks.

The Discover network is not widely available In Europe. Stick to either the PLUS or CIRRUS networks. And that is why you carry more than one credit card.

I had no trouble using my Capital One Venture card last fall in Paris and more recently in London.
Fred, the Capital One credit cards have nothing to do with the Discover network. Mine is a Mastercard.

I used my Capital One Mastercard credit card all over Paris…no problems anywhere.I also bought Orsay tickets in advance last year without issue.

Bill, perhaps calling the customer service number on the back of your card would help, to ensure there’s not something they need to do to get your credit card properly accepted for all your upcoming transactions. Maybe there’s something they’re already aware of, or to which they need to be alerted.

I have no trouble with my Cap One Visa generally BUT G7 would not accept it to set up an app to call a G7 cab. I phone for an airport cab and pay the driver but I can't order a cab on my phone

Discover cards, whether credit or debit, are not reliable overseas. Period.
Capital One Visa and MC should work no differently from any other Visa or MC. Saying one's Capital One card works in Sumatra is irrelevant to use of Discover cards generally; it's the financial network that dictates card acceptance, not the issuing bank.
Capital One is trying to build the Discover network into a true competitor to Visa and MC. It might be fine for US use, but for travelers it just isn't.

Capital One has purchase the Discover network and is transitioning their Visa/MC cards to Discover. If you hold a Capital One credit card with a number starting with 4 or 5, (Visa or MC respectively), you should be OK. If your Capital One credit card number begins with a 6, it has been switched to the Discover network and I would not bother bringing it to Europe.

This has been a nightmare. My main bank was Capital One - before when it was ING I got it expressly so that I could not pay foreign transaction fees. Irony that it's not taken anywhere in Europe now. The Credit card is odd though. I'd give them a call.

I have a Capital One credit card that is still on the Visa network. I used it daily without any problems while in Paris for twelve days in October 2025.
