Problems due to May 1 holiday

We have to figure out what to do on the May 1 holiday. At this point we will be in the Alsace area. No museums are open. No castle tour either. Will wineries be open? Any other thoughts? I realize we can drive around and look at the little villages, but I am not sure for a whole day if we cannot taste wine.

May 1 is a major holiday, just like Christmas day. Don't expect anything to be open, book your restaurant reservations as early as possible.

There is a calendar of local events in the Alsace region.

In Germany we celebrated with the locals. There was a May Day parade, crowning of the May King and May Queen, decorating the Maypole, dancing, booths with food and beverages. Also there were numerous groups of young children dressed in all white in processions walking to their churches to receive their First Communion.

We had lunch, visited a public garden, wine at cafe, walked around. . It was a very laid back day with little crowds. It was relaxing and fun.

I have no specifics to suggest, but churches are often open on holidays when most other sights are closed.

Make up a picnic and walk from one of the villages up through the vineyards.
