private tours in paris

I am currently planning a trip to Paris. I would like input on booking a private tour of The Louvre and the Palace Versailles. Can anyone recommend a great guide?

Hi brands,

Although on the spendy side, we booked a tour of the Louvre with Paris Muse and it was so worth it! Small group of 4 maximum and our guide was working on her PHD in art history. She brought the art alive for us and really made the experience! We have also used Context Tours in the past and had similar great experiences with them. We did have a tour once with a guide from the museum itself but it was not very good or interesting....that may have changed as this was a few years ago and led us to hire the private guide on the next visit. Good luck!

Happy Travels!

Iris Amice, professional tour guide. She sometimes works for Paris Walks and has created several of their tours, including the Chocolate Walk. You can see her on episode 2 of the Globe Trekker on Paris. dayinsummer@yahoo.com

We also did the Louvre tour with Paris Muse. It was just the two of us and the guide. We met her at 4:00pm and although I believe it was supposed to be a 2-2.5 hour tour, it was 7:00pm before we finished. She was just delightful and tuned into our interests. A worthwhile splurge!

Meant to say that we chose 4:00pm as we wanted to go when the museum was getting a bit quieter, so on an evening it was open late. It was a good strategy. Crowds were minimal except at the Mona Lisa.

FWIW, the Private Apartments of the Kings tour offered by the palace itself was wonderful. Small group size and very affordable. You get into rooms that aren't open to the public, at least without a guide. Not sure how it compares to a private guide, but I highly recommend it for what it is.
