We will be going on the Rick Steve's 7 Day Paris tour in June. I was wondering if it would be helpful to hire a privage guide during the "free" time we have during some of the days. I have never done this, but have had friends who do private guide tours.
I think the first thing you need to do is figure out what it is you want to see in your free time. Then decide if a private guide is necessary or if you can just as easily do it on your ownl
I agree with CJean. You will do some walking tours and museums with your RS guide. What might you want to see that is not covered on the tour?
In thinking about this, it occurs to me you could book a private tour with Paris Walks to see perhaps the Pere Lachaise Cemetery if that is of interest, or one of their other themed tours. You might also consider a food tour.
We have used Paris Greeters once, last fall. These are low-key, more intimate tours by locals who volunteer their time and knowledge. We will use another greeter in two weeks, Patrick, for a 2 hour tour of the Marais. it's important to be sure the greeter speaks enough English if you don't speak French (which I do). It will be clear in the initial contact from the greeter. They need a few weeks' notice to make a match so contact them ahead. A Canadian friend recommended them. Her guide was great. Our first one (in St. Germaine des Prés) was ok but not stellar. This other one, coming up (Patrick) looks better already!
There may be a few others on the tour but it will be a small group (maybe even truly "private" if no one else matches up with your time and interest).
Thank you to all who gave advice about Paris guides!
