There will be two of us in Paris in December. I have booked two different private guides that work for themselves. Do we tip? I have before but since there is little tipping in Paris and they are not working for anyone I was wondering.

Pay them what they ask. Tipping is unnecessary.

Tipping isn't necessary. Whenever I have seen Americans tip, I've seen other nationalities look confused and even ask what it was for. Even had one guide say "Many Americans tip as they're a tipping culture."
In my POV, let's not americanize Europe any more than it already is. I dread the days where they'll turn the iPad around and ask for a tip just for handing me my pain au chocolat.
