A quick check may show the fast train may be much quicker than driving. Good luck. With toilets and food service.

Definitely quicker and more comfortable by train. Not to say cheaper, even at short notice. You can still buy tickets for 79€ for tomorrow, and it's a 2 hour journey. By car it's at least 5 hours

If your father has been hospitalized, talk to the doctor and the hospital social worker about having transportation organized for him. For shorter distances, we have medical taxi services. National health care here will certainly have protocols, recommended transportation method and help for you. They'll also help you with medical equipment, wheelchair, etc.

Bets , Thank you so much. I did not think of that. Everyone has been very lovely. We are so grateful for how kind the people are and for goggle translate.
I did not think of the wheelchair.. that will be very helpful.
A car transport for those who suggested the train, would be door to door and would eliminate having to manage luggage and the walk to the train. I may look into handicap accessible services.
Thanks

Note that there is also medical transport by car VSL (Véhicule Sanitaire Léger) that you can use for short distances to/from the train station or the airport

I don't know if the cost can be covered by insurance but it's worth finding out.
It’s around €1 per kilometer plus various fees ranging from €50 to €100

An example in Lyon:

https://lyontaxivsl.fr/

Click on the "Reservation en ligne" button, then you have a form selectable in English which will gives you an estimate of the price

For door-to-door Lyon→Paris transport, you can also request the price online with "Taxi Santé Lyon"

https://www.taxi-sante-lyon.fr/

I have made this kind of request for long distance transport by VSL for an elderly person a few years ago, it was more than €1200.

In order for any medical transport to be reimbursed for us, French residents, we need a prescription. You need to work through the hospital service for this, but JoLui has given you an idea of the costs. You'll see with your US insurance.

Med taxi to the train.
SNCF mobility service at both ends boarding and disembarking.
Med taxi to your Paris destination.

Thank you so much for this information. Fortunately Dad is doingbgreat and was discharged today. He is able to walk short distances so we are uber or taxi to restaurants and hotel. Will take uber to train station and have secured handicapped assistance from SNCF here in lyon and then in geneva.
Everyone was so helpful and kind on forum and here in Lyon. Dad had a hard time with the hospital breakfast of s 'bowl of coffee and a rock like biscuit' but that was resolved when I found Kelloggs cornflakes in the grocery and the nurse got him s container of milk and sugar. LOL. Its the little things. Thanks again

Good news thank you for the update.
FYI taxi and uber information: we’re in Lyon now meeting family visiting from the US. My son has had Uber fail a few times but taxis have been reliable and much less expensive than what Uber posted for the same routes.
