Pricing on a Train

I want to go from CDG to Caen. On a Oui train.... We are staying at an Air BNB in Bayeux. I know I can go via train at the Gare St. Lazare station to Caen. We are a family of four. It seems so expensive round trip. The tickets are 90 Euro a piece. Is it cheaper with 4 people to hire a taxi or an Uber to take us to Caen or Bayeux?

Thanks in advance!!

What day are you looking to travel and on what site are you using to look at the prices?
I see Paris to Caen for as low 15 euros one way.
But you should just a taxi to Paris Gare St Lazare from the airport

Are you traveling tomorrow? The price sounds high but it could be that all the low priced tickets are sold out or you are looking at fully refundable tickets. In any event, if the price is correct, a taxi should cost around 300€ to get to Caen from CDG (it's about a 3-hour drive in good conditions) and around that to return to Paris. I understand why if you are flying in you would want fully refundable tickets for the train to Caen but maybe you can get the lowest price tickets for the train back to Paris or drive back to Paris with the car that I am guessing you will be renting in Caen (because why would you go to Caen to get to Bayeux unless it is to rent a car).

If you are staying in Bayeux why not take the train to Bayeux rather than Caen? That price seems very high but again, it depends on the day you are traveling. I booked a ticket from Paris (Gare St Lazare) direct to Bayeux for June 2 for only 9 euros. The trip will take 2 hours 47 minutes. Look on the official French rail site. Oui.sncf or trainline. The schedule and the price will be the same on both. Again, not sure when you are traveling but if you can wait a while you may want to check daily to see if there are additional trains. When I first started looking prices were very high and there were no direct trains. I held off and all of a sudden one day there were many more choices! If you are traveling soon that may not be an option:(

If you decide to take a taxi you also need to consider space for 4 people plus driver and luggage for 4 could possibly be an issue. Someone elso on the forum may be able to speak to that. Also, while the taxi ride may be 3 hours or so without traffic, it can be much longer if you are traveling during busy times.

Good luck with your plans!!

The date we need to travel is Monday April 1. I checked again tonight. From Gare St. Lazare to Bayeux it is 100 Eur. I am still perplexed why it's so expensive. Has anyone hired a driver? We only take 1 carry on bag each, so a regular sized car could take us all the way to Bayeux.....

We are planning a similar trip for a family of four and decided to rent the car at the airport and drive to Bayeux instead of taking a taxi, then the train, then renting a car. I would NOT recommend doing this on your arrival day after a flight from the US. It works for us because we’re arriving after a week in Spain, so no jet lag issues.

If you are going from Paris to Bayeux after a flight from the US, I wouldn’t buy tickets from Gare St. Lazare in advance, in case of delays. This means your tickets will be more expensive, but probably still cheaper than a taxi to Caen.

I just did the pricing on April 1 for a trip from Paris to Bayeux (why were you asking about Caen when you want to go Bayeux) and the most expensive tickets are 44.30€ per person in second class each way. Where are you getting 100€ from? Even round trip, it is slightly less than 90€ per person. In any event, I already told you the estimated price to Caen. Add about 30€ to that for the trip to Bayeux from CDG. Just a gut feeling but I doubt very much you will find anyone at this forum who has spent 330€ for a driver to get from Paris to Bayeux. In 2013, I was told by my friend's father who lives in Paris and used to work to Taxi G7 to estimate 1.12€ per kilometer to get the lower end of the price. It is approximately 285 kilometers from CDG to Bayeux.

As to the train, at this point, you are so close to the date of travel that you may as well buy your ticket on the day of travel if you take the train -- just make sure that you leave enough time at the station to do that. I am a bit surprised that you find the ticket prices to be so expensive. If you took the train from New York City to Baltimore which is almost the same distance as Paris to Caen, you would pay about US$86 for the cheapest currently available one way ticket.

No.
