We are taking a day trip from Paris to Versaille on a Friday at the end of May. Do we need to prebook our trains or can we take the metro there? We are staying near the Porte Maillot Metro Station.

Take the RER line C towards Versailles Château Rive Gauche. It's a commuter train - no reservation possible. The RER station is co-located with your Metro station,

RER C to Champs de Mars, change to RER C to Versailles Chateau Rive Droite.
